SoCal From Wednesday--(Dec. 3, 1998)

Again, our motto is "better late than never" and in case you just can't get enough of the scores and results, here are the rest we coud track down from Wednesday.

LA CITY SECTION:

Kennedy 85, Van Nuys 68--Vince Hamilton scored 19 points to lead 1-0 Kennedy in the season opener. Kennedy had three more players in double figures; Nana Gbewonyo had 18 points, Jaaver Webster had 13 and Rathan Grooms contributed 12 to round out a balanced scoring attack for the Cougars. Abe Morabbi had 30 points for Van Nuys.

SOUTHERN SECTION:

Carpinteria 61, Valley Christian 57--John Barbieri scored a career-high 39 points and Tyler Matson added 10 points and 20 rebounds as Carpinteria opened its season Monday night with a non-league win at Santa Maria Valley Christian

Montclair Prep 58, Milken Community 46--Joshiah Johnson, the son of former UCLA great Marques Johnson's and brother of the most recent former UCLA Bruin Kris Johnson,  had 16 points for the visiting Mounties (0-1), who came back from a one point halftime deficit to knock off Milken Community (1-1).

Diamond Bar 59, Upland 54--Diamond BarBrian Pichon scored all of his 25 points in the final three quarters as host Diamond Bar rallied to beat Upland 59-54 in a nonleague boys basketball game Wednesday. Pichon sank four 3-pointers and Kenneth Mitchell added seven assists for the Brahmas, who made 20-of-24 free throws. Diamond Bar (1-0) trailed 16-4 at the end of one quarter, but rallied to take a 41-36 lead at the end of three quarters. Upland, led by Desmond Penigar's 24 points took a four-point lead in the fourth quarter, but faltered late.

CLAREMONT-DAMIEN TOURNEY
Pool Play At Damien HS

Baldwin Park  60, N. Torrance 57--Godoy and Cordero combined for 35 of the Brave's 60 points as Baldwin Park improves to
1-1 and North Torrance falls to 1-1.

Chino 40, Damien 58-- Ryan Navarre was the key to Damien's success with 21 points and five rebounds to improve
them to 2-0. Chino (0-2) was held to just 13 points in the second half.

At Claremont HS

Ganesha 43, Claremont 53:  Whitton's three 3-pointers and six assists led Claremont (1-0) to their first win. Ganesha had
three players in double figures but still fell to 0-2.

Montclair 48, West Covina 47: Issac Jones of Montclair hit the game winning shot with about 1:30 left to play. Garreth Read,
also from Montclair scored a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 blocks. The win keeps Montclair undefeated at 2-0.


SERRANO TOURNAMENT

El Segundo 63, Palmdale 61--Guard J.T. Leitch finished with 20 points, six assists and four steals to lead the Eagles (1-0) to the first round victory over Palmdale (0-1). Forward Charles Talanoa added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Eagles, who outscored Palmdale
15-13 in the fourth quarter to get the victory.

LOYOLA TOURNAMENT:

Buena 68, Beverly Hills 47--Peter Brown had 21 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs (2-0) in a Loyola tournament victory.

Peninsula 86, Mid-City 51--The Panthers (2-0) dominated from the start and won the second-round game at Loyola as Charlie Kundrat scored 19 points and Jay Lescoulie added 14 points.
