Nighthawk Classic At Murrieta
Valley High School--(Dec. 16, 1998)

We don't really have any of the details of this tournament, be we're pretty sure it's a 16 team event, because Murrieta Valley didn't play yesterday, and yet they are the host school.  We also don't have a schedule of future games, but here's what we do know from yesterday's games:

Rancho Verde 72, Temecula Chaparral 61-- Rancho Verde used a smothering defense to defeat Temecula Chaparral, 72-61, Tuesday in pool play of the Nighthawk Classic at Murrieta Valley High School. J.S. Nash led the Mustangs with 19 points and Preston Norman added 13 points and 17 rebounds. Chaparral (3-1) led 41-33 at halftime, but Rancho Verde outscored the Pumas 22-4 in the third quarter to put the game away. "The difference was our intensity in the second half," said Rancho Verde coach Bill Ciancio. "The third quarter really pumped our kids up and showed us that we can't just walk
through any game this season." Rancho Verde had five players score in double figures and used a balanced attack to run away in the second half. Chaparral outscored Rancho Verde 30-17 in the second quarter but came out flat in the third. "Chaparral just wasn't ready for us in the third quarter," said Ciancio. "The kids did an outstanding job all game, and the third quarter may have been our best quarter of the season."
