Tuesday First Round: Crescenta
Valley Tournament--(Dec. 16, 1998)

The second round of this tournament gets underway today.   Franklin plays Poly at 3:15 p.m., followed by Maranatha v. Crescenta Vally at 4:45 p.m. and Resceda v. Verdugo Hills at 6:00 p.m..  Finally, North Torrance is scheduled to play Venice at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

We don't have complete results, but we do have all the scores from yesterday's first round, and it looks like Venice is having some difficulty after their complete meltdown in the Beverly Hills tourney.  We're certain that Dave Goosen will get David Vance, Glen McGowan and Joe Dural back on track today against No. Torrance, but yesterday they were beaten by Franklin.  Huh?  Here are the scores from yesterday:

Pool Play:

Crescenta Valley 57, Reseda 46
Franklin 77, Venice 64
Mawranatha 72, Verdugo Hills 56
North Torrance 70, LA Poly 44

We have some of the details and here are the ones which were reported:

Crescenta Valley 57, Reseda 46--Kean Mallory scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, and the Falcons built an 11-point lead after two quarters and coasted to a pool-play victory at the Crescenta Valley tournament.   Freshman Chris Tarne had 10 points and eight assists, and sophomore James Jenkins had 18 rebounds for the Falcons (4-2).

Maranatha 72, Verdugo Hills 56-- Ben Hamady scored 16, including two three pointers and David Newkirk poured in 20 for Maranatha which eacily beat Verdugo hills.  Paul Mason had 11 and Bryan Pistole had 14, including one three.   Maranatha ikmoroved to 5-2, while Verdugo dropped to 1-6.  Baird had 13 and Williams 16 for Verdugo.
