Canyon Pounds Costa Mesa In
Non-League Opener--(Dec. 6, 1998)

Anaheim Canyon met up with Costa mesa for both teams' non-league openers on Friday night at Costa Mesa, and Canyon really spoiled the party for CM, as  Canyon won 66 to 48, pretty much dominating most of the game. Canyon,   (1-0) used runs of 9-0 and 7-0 to seize a 22-9 first-quarter lead, then put together surges of 12-0 and 7-0 to push the lead to 25 in the fourth quarter.

Costa Mesa was able to put together a 10-0 run with Bryan Rice's three-pointer with seven seconds in the first quarter, getting the score to 22-16, but that was about the best they could do. Costa Mesa, which is 0-2 on the season,   scored six straight points early in the fourth quarter and finished with a 9-2 run, but they couldn't catch Canyon.  Costa Mesa's poor shooting performance was largely a result of Canyon's defense, and CM hit just 14 of 51 from the field (27.5%), while the Canyon made 25 of 50.  Costa Mesa forced 14 turnovers, while committing just eight. But Costa Mesa really had no answer for Roger Hogan (6'-0" Jr. SG/PG) who hit for 24 points, shooting 67% from the field, including two three pointers. Neil Hammad (6'-3" Sr. SG) who scored 14, or Ryan Romberg (6'-8" Sr. C) who managed 13 and 10 rebounds.   The complete scoring for Canyon was:  Hogan 24, Hammond 14, Romberg 13, Taylor 7, Willis 2, Yu 2, Eftekhari 2, Minhaus 2. 3-pt. goals - Hogan 4, Hammond 2.

Costa Mesa was not completely without offense as Bryan Rice hit for three three-pointers, as did sophomore Steve Whittaker who came in off the bench to hit three treys as well.  Nate Jones and Shaun Ferryman each added 11 points for the Mustangs. Ferryman and Jones also grabbed seven rebounds, while junior point guard Dave Weir had three assists.  Costa Mesa's complete scoring was:  Rice 11, Jones 11, Ferryman 11, Whittaker 9, Tran 4, Hatsushi 2, Weir 0, Payne 0, Hunter 0, Abbott 0. 3-pt. goals - Rice 3, Whittaker 3.
