Artesia Pounds Pioneer In
Gahr-Cerritos Tourney--(Dec. 4, 1998)

One of these days we won't have a conflict in our schedules and we'll actually get to see Artesia during regular season play against other high school teams, rather than just during the summer, spring and fall when they play together as a traveling team.  Oh well, at least we've got some news about  how they're doing.   And they are doing very well, as last night Artesia just killed Pioneer, 95-55.   Artesia got a game high 26 points, six rebounds and three assists from Jason Kapono (6'-8" Sr. SG/SF/PF) in one of his best displays yet in a impressive pool play victory over the Titans at Gahr High. Artesia is ranked No. 1 by Cal-Hi Sports and is also ranked by USA Today as No. 6 in the nation in the "mythical" high school rankings.  Apolinar Fernandez (6'-8" So. F) scored 18 points and grabbed three boards, while Jack Martinez (6'-7" So. F) scored 15 points and had nine rebounds.

Others scoring for Artesia were Andre Hazel with 9, Aaron Hamilton with 10, Marcus Heron with 2, Jones 2, Reyes with 5, and Jon Steffanson scored 4. Artesia never trailed and opened up the first quarter with a 26-5 lead. In the second quarter, the Pioneers of Artesia backed off a bit and let Pioneer score a little and Artesia only scored 3 more points, 13-16 for the quarter, but it was enough for a 42-18 halftime lead.  The third quarter was no better for Pioneer as Artesia again blasted them, outscoring Pioneer 30-16.

In other Gahr-Cerritos Tournament action:

Gahr 48, Gardena 32--Senior point guard Anthony Davis scored 14 points to lead the Gladiators (2-0) over the Mohicans (1-1) in pool play action at Gahr High. Gahr held Gardena to only two points in the first quarter, and the score at the end of the first quarter was 14-2.

Bellflower 60, St. John Bosco 52--Senior forward Marcus Harvey scored 16 points and Daron Botts had 11 as the Buccaneers improved to 2-0 with a pool play win over the Braves (0-2) at Cerritos. Gill Brown led St. John Bosco with 12 points.

Poly 84, Cerritos 34--Shea Anderson led a balanced attack with 10 points as the Jackrabbits easily improved to 2-0 with a pool play win over the Dons (1-1) at Cerritos.  Rahman Shotwell scored 4 points, Wesley Stokes had 8, Marcus Sargent had 8, while Kenny Wright had 5.  John Kresl scored 8, and Joe Travis had 7. Keeyon Cooley also managed to score 4, and John Penman had 4 as well.
