Ventura To Reinstate Men's
Program Next Year--(Nov. 3, 1998)

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the Ventura College men's basketball program will return next season. The program was disbanded last year following allegations of recruiting violations by a prior coach. After a newly hired coach refused to participate, claiming that he was not told of the impending probation that was imposed for the violations, most of the remaining players decided to leave and play elsewhere.  Ventura will conduct a nationwide search for a coach starting in the spring.

Ventura disbanded the program last November, a month after the Pirates were placed on probation for two years and banned from postseason play by the Western State Conference. The sanctions were imposed after Ventura was found to have violated several state rules, including providing players with money, free or reduced-rate meals and access to campus telephones, facilities and vehicles.

Those who remember back about two years will remember that the men's team finished at the finals and three years ago was the state championship team among community colleges in California.
