Tito Maddox Verbals To ASU? Possibly--(Nov. 10, 1998)

Frank Burlison of the Orange County Register and Mark Mayemura and David Benezra of Recruiting USA are reporting that Tito Maddox (6'-4" Sr. PG/SG) from Compton, has given a verbal committment to coach Rob Evans of Arizona State.  We've been unable to reach Tito to confirm the report, but it's no secret that the Sun Devils have been recruiting Tito hard since the summer.  While he was also being recruited by UConn and Michigan, he never took his official visit to UConn which was supposed to take place several weeks ago but which was cancelled because the university never received his transcripts.

Frank B and R-USA are also reporting that the verbal, reportedly the sixth for ASU, completes the recruiting class for this season.   Prior ASU verbals include  Donnell Knight (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF), Shawn Redhag (6'-7" Sr. F), Tanner Shell (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF), and Tommie Smith (6'-8" Sr. PF).   And Mayemura and Benezra are continuing to list Chris Osborne (6'-9" Sr. F) as a verbal committment for ASU even though we reported about a month ago that Osborne had backed away from the verbal to the Sun Devils, and had opened up his recruitment again.

If the number of available scholarships for the Devils is six, and if Osborne decides to go to ASU, then the recruiting would indeed be done for the year.  But if other reports, including what we've heard directly from Osborne and his coach are true, then ASU still has one to give, and it could very well go to Leon Smith (6'-10" Sr. PF/C) who is still trying to enroll at Compton and who has said that he wants to play with Tito in the future.   Stay tuned as we'll probably find out soon what's up with Tito and Leon in the next few days.
