More Compton News: Leon Smith
Sightings. . . Not In SoCal--(Nov. 11, 1998)

Leon Smith (6'-10" Sr. C) from Chicago's MLK has not yet arrived in California.  He reportedly has retained a lawyer in Illinois and has initiated the necessary proceedings in order to obtain his emancipation so that he can leave Chicago and enroll in school in California.  Whether the necessary proceedings can be accomplished in time for him to enroll at Compton before the start of the season is something that's a big unknown for now.

If Leon ends up not being eligible to play this season, or doesn't get himself eligible for college next year, expect him to make the immediate jump to the NBA.  Sonny Vaccaro has said of him that he's the number one candidate in the senior class, from a skills and body-type point of view, to make the jump to the draft.  "He's this year's Tracy McGrady," Sonny has said.   Actually we hope for his sake that he turns out to be this year's Kobe Bryant instead.
