Los Alamitos HS Hires Richard
Smith As New Coach--(Oct. 8, 1999)

The Orange County Register reported today that Los Alamitos has hired former Servite and Newport Harbor coach Richard Smith to replace Steve Brooks, who resigned as the boys' coach last week.

The story in the Register, quoted Nancy Grgas, the president of the Los Al boosters' club as being upset not with the choice of coach, but with the process and the fact that the Los Al parents weren't more involved:  "There are a lot of parents upset that we weren't involved at all in the process," Grgas said.   "We realize its not our decision, but you should at least ask for inpput from the parents you are asking to support and raise money for the program."

Smith, 38, teahces computer science at Los Al.  He was the coach at Servite and led them to a CIF D-III State Championship in 1989-90, and to the CIF SS title in 1990-91.  He has not coached since he was at Newport Harbor, where he resigned five years ago.
