Jim Downs Confirms Three
Walk-Ons At UCLA--(Oct. 6, 1999)

Admittedly, until later this month, there won't be a lot going on at many of the colleges other than pickup games and players taking part in individual conditioning,  without the coaches.  But if you want to know what's going on at the UCLA pickup games, Jim Downs' UCLA Hoop News site is always a good source for those of us who can't get over to Westwood to watch them often enough (forget playing in them. . . we'll leave that to Jim).  Downs' most recent column from this morning confirmed the presence of three walk-ons, including the presence of Schea Anderson (6'-6" Fr. SF) from Long Beach Poly.

Jim also confirmed that Jason Bow (6'-2" Fr. SG) from Rancho Buena Vista High (who wrote to us last spring and told us that he intended to try walking-on to the team, giving up full-ride scholarships at several other schools in order to attend UCLA) is attempting his walk-on debut, and he filled us in on yet another new "Jason" trying to make the team.  Here's what Jim had to say:

"New faces? Even Bruin die-hards might need a program on the first day of open practice (October 21), as there are a few walk-ons trying to make the team. Schea Anderson and Jason Bow have long been rumored to want to walk on, and it appears that they are doing just that. But a transfer student could end up being the most "impact" walk-on: 5'10" guard Jason Flowers, who played at UCI last season, has opened some eyes in recent post-conditioning pick-up games. We liked Jason when we saw him play for the Anteaters the last two years, and he could eventually give the Bruins some minutes at point. Flowers will have to sit out this season pursuant to NCAA rules, but word has it that the cat-quick Jason makes for a great practice sparring partner for Earl Watson, now that Baron Davis is gone."

We hope that Flowers is as good as Jim says he is; we know that Anderson and Bow are, and wish them well in their attempts to make the team.

There's a lot more news in Jim's column from today, so be sure to visit his site.
