Gilbert Arenas Picks Arizona. . .
For Real--(Oct. 4, 1998)

Gilbert Arenas (6'-3" Sr. SG) from Grant High School in Van Nuys has verbally committed to the Arizona Wildcats.   Gilbert called coach Olson late last night and accepted the scholarship offer.  In doing so, Gilbert passed up offers from DePaul and Kansas State.

We spoke with Gil's dad this morning and he confirmed it, saying that the "newspaper reports are true."  Gil's dad said, "we talked with Coach Olson late last night, and said Gilbert would be coming.  He's really excited about it, and sure that he made the right decision. He's also excited that he'll be playing here at Pauley against UCLA and at the Sports Arena against 'SC, so his friends and family can watch him."

We expect Gilbert to fully qualify. He's already received a passing score on the SAT and used summer school this year to make up a grade in one of his core classes.  Gilbert will fit in well with the three guard rotation Arizona is so fond of and should be an immediate impact player.

Congratulations to Gilbert and to the Arizona Wildcats.
