Gilbert Arenas: DePaul May Be
Out Of The Running--(Oct. 1, 1998)

So we talked with Gilbert Arenas, Sr.   just two days ago, and we learn that Gilbert Arenas (6'-3" Sr. SG) from Grant High in Van Nuys, had a "great" recruiting trip on his official visit to Arizona.  We also learn that Gilbert did not commit on the trip, and that he still planned to take an official visit to DePaul this coming weekend (October 3 & 4).

But today we read in the Arizona Star (courtesy of an alert from one of our readers Chuck Hicks, Mr. Bear Down himself) the following:

Recruit likes UA, Kansas State

Gilbert Arenas, a 6-foot-3-inch combo guard from Grant High School in Van Nuys, Calif., said yesterday he will not make a scheduled basketball recruiting visit to DePaul this weekend, thus narrowing his choices to Arizona and Kansas State.

Arenas said he ``loved'' his official visit last weekend to the UA but that Kansas State still remained in the picture. He is expected to make a commitment by next week; should he choose Arizona, the Wildcats likely would stop recruiting Seattle Franklin High School guard Jimmie Haywood, who began wavering on his commitment last month.

We don't know who Gilbert "said" this to, and we're still trying to reach him. As soon as we have it straightened out we'll let everyone know.  But from what we hear from other sources who are definitely in a position to know, this report is about 99% reliable.
