Gary Holmes Soars With The Eagles--(Oct. 6, 1998)

Gary Holmes (6'-6" Sr. F) from Fontana High has given a verbal committment to 4th year head coach Steve Aggers of Eastern Washington University.   We got a note from Gary's high school coach, John McNally, letting us know that Gary gave the verbal to EWU this morning. He tripped up there last weekend and decided he liked it up there.  Gary is a very intelligent player with good knowledge of the game, an excellent handle.  On his high school team and most traveling teams we've seen him play with he's mostly called upon to be an inside banger, boxing out well, and cleaning the class with his good hops.  But he can also step out and hit the outside shot, all the way out to three-point range with a great deal of regularity, and in college we'd project him probably as a combo two/three type player, using his good shooting skills as a sort of "power guard" and his ability to slash to the basket to grab boards or drive to the hole when needed.  He plays very good defense, and he'll fit in very well with Agger's up-tempo and unselfish style of play.

The Eagles were third in the Big Sky conference last year at 16-10 overall and they are only destined to get better. When Gary graduates from Fontana, he will join fellow SoCal players Deon Williams (6'-2" Jr. PG) from Verbum Dei, who will be a senior when Gary is a freshman,  Tony McGee (6'-2" So. G) from Valley View High School in Moreno Valley,  (with a short detour at the Naval Academy), Eddie Turner III (6'-7" So. F) from Claremont High in Pomona,  and Alex Carcamo (6'-7" Jr. F) from Hamilton High and Santa Monica CC who will also be a senior.

This is a great pickup for Eastern Washington. We'll look forward to seeing Gary when he comes back down to Southern California to play San Diego and Cal Poly in the traditional preseason games, and Cal State Northridge during the regular conference schedule.
