Venice High Looking For
A Tourney & More--(Sept. 24, 1999)

No, we don't mean they're looking for "more" but who knows, the Gondoliers might be.  We heard from Venice head coach Dave Goosen a few days ago and he wanted us to let other coaches know that Venice is still looking for one more tournament to complete their schedule.  The open dates are either November 29 through December 4, or  January 3 through January 8

He also let us in on a bit of the comings and goings among prospective Venice players.  As we reported a few weeks ago, Steven Brown (6'-5" Jr. SG) is indeed at Palisades High.  However, we were surprised to hear that Venice's very promising freshman, Doug Hall (6'-7" Fr. PF) has decided to enroll at neighboring Crossroads.  Additionally, but not entirely unexpectedly, Greg Jones (6'-9" Sr. PF), who also happens to be the brother of LA Clipper Keith Closs, has also transferred out of City Section, to parts unknown.  Greg had tremendous potential as a 14 year old freshman, but in the past few years, he's been at a succession of schools and has not really developed the way many thought he would.

Venice does have a couple of new players, including several transfers:  Marius Davis (6'-3'' So. SG) from Manual Arts, Jonathan Gulley (6'-3" So. SG) from Gardena, and Darrick Martin (6'-0" So. PG) from Fairfax have all decided to enroll at Venice.  Addtionally, there are a couple of very promising freshman who are expected to make significant contributions this season, including Brent Miles (6'-0" Fr. PG) and Yancy Clark (6'-5" Fr. F).

We'll have a more in-depth preview of this team in the coming weeks.  In the meantime, if there are any coaches out there looking for another team for their tournament, give Dave Goosen a call at (310)239-8645.
