Long Beach Fall Hoops Classic:
Teams & Players--(Sept. 9, 1999)

According to the schedule we received, the Long Beach Fall Hoops Classic, which takes place this weekend starting Friday Septmeber 10 and continuing through Sunday, September 12 will feature 36 teams.  Here's who's coming, and the players you're likely to see, as far as we can tell without having any rosters. Among the top-seeded teams will be:

QBL-Lakewood--This will be basically/entirely the Artesia high school team, with Amaury Fernandez and Jack Martinez, two of the best big men in the junior class, top point guard prospect Andre Hazel,  and lots of younger guys like Armond Ivory, Tony Roberts, Franklin Matos, Ryan Reyes, Malcohm Herron, Sam Nadeau, Jon Steffansoon, and Ryan Meiuller.  The two Clovis West guys might also join them, Chris Hernandez, one of the best young point guard prospects in the junior class on the West Coast, and Charlie Rodriguez, a tough sophomore power forward.

The Hood--Basically the entire Compton Dominguez HS team, with 7'-0" Tyson Chandler, point guard Keilon Fortune, shooters Bobby Jones, Larry Johnson, Keion Kindred, Michah McKinney, Steve Moore and Montel Williams, a couple of newcomers in Jamel Gay, Saul Lankster. Sherman Gay was injured at the end of the summer, and we'll find out how serious it was.  You'll also see some of the best power forwards around in Darius Sanders and Keith Brooks,  and if past experience is any guide, Dominguez will probably have a few new faces too.

EBO-EA Sports-- This team, if it's at full strength, should have DeShawn Stevenson one of the top scoring guards on the West Coast and a top UCLA target, Deshawn Andersoon, Ronald Dosty, Cedric Barrow, Marcel Cummings, Jamaal Williams, big young Phillip Johnson from Arroyo Grande, Sredrick Powe, Chris Lopez and Maurice Tyree.

Belmont Shore I--Expect the usual suspects, including Ellis Myles, Travon Bryant, Wesley Stokes, Ryan Mollins, and possibly AJ. Diggs and some of the better Long Beach guys. We don't believe the Michels (senior Brett, and brother Shaun, a junior point who played with Dinos in Vegas) will be playing with Belmont, but then we'll have to wait and see. Dinos has always carried a slim roster,  usually no more than 8 players on any roster at a time, and that just means that whoever shows get to play a lot. What, no Tito Maddox?  (Just kidding, Tito is enrolled at Fresno State).

1 Tough School of BBall--According to Frank Burlison, this one will feature Josh Childress, one of the best pure shooters in the junior class, and the other half of the "Fab Four" Jamal Sampson from Mater Dei.

BWBA I & II-- Bob Gottlieb's teams will have a lot of guys from all over, including three from the Pump N Run teams since the Pumps haven't entered n this one, including Brandon Brooks, Heath Bailey, and David Gale.   Also playing for BWBA will be Martin Iti, a 6'-11" soph from Florida who has made a national name for himself at some of the camps.  Look for Harrison Schaen, Mater Dei's new incoming 6'-8" freshman, as well as local guys like Ryan Wilbur, Nicholas Paige, Ryan Westbrook, Michael Phillips, Marques Crane, Robert  Abreau, Danny Genung, Jeremiah Bell, Ryan Moore, Oliver Haworth, Ryan Evans and Matthew Nurse.   Bob will also have Ben Jacobsen, from Omaha, Nebraska.

Redondo--Basically, we'd expect to see guys like Andrew Zahn, Walter White, Ryan Mollins (when he's not with Dinos), and Andrew's "little" brother Adam, as well as Dijon Thompson, Dylan Mathis, Keith Ellison,   Sam Chance, Andrew Morris, and Andre Jones.

805 Express--This is George Albanez' team, and we'd expect to see Dominique Ingerson, who moved to Santa Barbara from Oakland this summer, Trey Putnam, Shawn Whilt, Alfred Williams, Adam Allegro, Joey Wallace, James Johnson and Jason Jackson.  You might also see some of the other oakland guys like James Akinjo and Marques Abrams, who were both at McClymonds last year with Ingerson.

Bay Area Ballers--No telling who they'll bring to this one; the No. 1 team this summer had Gary Smith, Chase Lyman, Matt Lemos, Justin Logan, Ryan Broker, Janon Rubin, Jermel Gilliard, Frank Black, Aaron Hines, Josh Keough, David Chiotti, and Patrick Dennehy, who probably won't play if the reports of his recent surgery are correct.  The No. 2 team featured Jared Ines, Jordan Couch, Brian Sykes, Tynan Davis, John Montgomery, London Young, Dylan Edrington, Rickey Lampkins and Hakim Gilliard, so it's possible that you'll see some combination of these guys in Long Beach this weekend.

Inland-- Elvert Perry's group, but without the prep players like Lawrence Carrier, Reginald Ross. Still, they should have Richard Cobbs, the great shooting incoming freshman, Jared Knox, Leon Rosborough, Bryant Robinson, Fabian Bean, Phillip Scott, Michael Hall, and possibly some other young guys like Howard Taylor, Royual Taylor, Brandon Jones, and Wendell Horn.

IEBP Originals--Keith Howard's team, expect to see David Joiner, Derrick Andrews, Jason Burrell, Lemar Ruffin, Will Kimble, DeMarcus Williams, and some of the best players from the San Bernardino and Riverside area.

Top Prospects--This is TPI which is run by Dart Stamps, and he's lately had some really young guys when the team hasn't been teamed up with Mike Lewis' ABC guys.  Dart has had lots of Westchester and Crenshaw guys in the past, so it's possible you'll see Tommy Johnson, E.J. Harris, A.J. Diggs, Jason Morrissette, Isaiah Fox, Chad Bell, and others.

ABC--See the notes to TPI above.  Mike Lewis has had lots of the Bishop Montgomery guys play for him in the past, and considering that the Pumps don't have a team here, you might see the Craven twins, Errick and Derrick (but then we were told they won't be playing by other sources) along with some of the ABC regulars. Gotta go to find out who's playing.

Other top teams participating are:

San Diego Alleycats--This is Anthony Williams' team.   No telling who will be there, but this summer he had Cedrick Palmer, Walter Herriott, Randy Bland, John Davis, Brian Marshall, Chris Robinson, James Profit, Ronald Harris, Andrew Foster, Jarrah Bolden, Nate Daniels, Ronald Coleman, and some guys he picked up along the way at the camps, including Venice High point guard Lyman Edwards

ARC Los Angeles--This is Robert Icart's team, and will undoubtedly have Todd Tomlinson from Moorpark and probably Deverion Mackey, but beyond those two, we have no idea.

ARC Burbank--This is Ron Quarterman's team, which features Eric Geffner, Andrew Moore, Michael Jenkins, Frank Reed, Mike Luderer, Keith Jarbo, Damien Jordan, Brandon Duplessie, and Cody Pearson among others.

ARC Team Dynamo--Ruben Sanchez, Sr.'s team, in Vegas they had Tyler Newton, Ruben Sanchez, Matt Biernat, Thomas Herring, Ryan McCormick, Kenny Johnson, Casey Markovic, Zach Smith and Doonnie Williams.

Future Stars Elite--This should be Ollie Goulston's team, but we can't tell from the info we've received. We heard that FSE played in the Back2School Bash last weekend at University High in Irvine, and that Steve Scoggin of Mater Dei played.  Other than that, we have no idea.

North Riverside--Other than Justin Garcia, all 7'-0" of him, we'd also expect to see J.S. Nash, Larry Gates, Michah Anderson, Raji Burnett, Lionel Dixon, and basically a lot of other guys from around Riverside, specifically J.W. North, Jurupa Valley, Valley View, and other schools in the area.

On2Hoop Future Stars--This is Fentriss Winn's team from Vista (San Diego) which will feature Jaris Cole, Ryan Read, Kevin Prins, Brian Gillis, John Schwartz, Nik Traner, Tim Brown, D.J. Hick, Chris Brins, Greg White, and their most prominent recruit, Nick Booker.

Arizona Stars--Art Dye's team, we're not sure who he's bringing. This summer they brought three teams to the Slam N Jam NIT, but they only have one team at this event; we'd expect to see Austin Ainge, Jon Howard, Darryl Isaac, Skyler Musser and most of the other guys off the No.1 team from the summer, with a few from the younger teams, but this is strictly a guess on our part and we'll just have to wait and see.

Monsters of the Midway--This is Dave Bloomfield's team from Simi Valley, and we know he'll have Andrew Bloomfield and Adam Drell.  This past summer, the roster included mostly guys from the Pasadena area such as Kirk Herald,   Elliot Huckaby, Marshall Duncan, Derrick Andrews, Boobby Simms, Joshua Duncan, and Doug Thomas.

Total Impact--This is Sam Alipio's team, and it will have Jamyne Potts, Peter McCaslin, Vincent Legal, Michael Reich, Robert Rakestraw, Bomani Braggs, Jess Valero, Logan Steinhauer, and Sean Coles.

Hype Squad--This is Richard Issacs' team, with this summer featured J.J. James, Deric Isaacs, Willie Montgomery, Carlos Arroyo, and a bunch of Venice guys like Kevin Eleby, Montel Duhon (when they weren't playing for the Pumps) as well has Chris Chapman, Tony Alexander, and Kevin Edmunds from Orange County.  Of course, this team has also had lots of Crenshaw guys, including E.J and Tommy in the past, so who plays will be interesting.  We're betting this time it's mostly OC guys.

Teams that we in fact know little or practically nothing about include:

Belmont Shore II--A younger team for Dinos?   We'll just have to wait and see who shows.

ICAN All Stars--We have no real idea who will be on this team, but you might see a lot of Manual Arts, Gardenia, Crenshaw, and a couple of Westchester guys if past experience is any guide.

Orange County Rebels--No idea who they have, but they're reportedly mostly from Anaheim.

ABA-USA Hoops--A team from Coto de Caza, Ca., they are a complete mystery at this time.

West Coast Academy--We don't have a clue. . . Yet. . .

Compton Magic--We've heard rumors that Etop Udo-Ema will finally coach a team, and this one could be it.  No idea who will play.

Shooting Stars--This team is from Huntington Beach, but until we see them, we don't have any idea who is coming.

Finally, there's a whole slew of teams where we have no idea who will be playing.  These include, Intensity BasketballNo Limit, Camp Exposure (Ace Daniels' team, and right now, we have no idea who is on it), and the Orange County Hawks (ditto for this team which is from Laguna Hills).

As soon as we get the rosters, we'll post them up, so that we can correct all of the above nonsense. See you there.
