LB Fall Hoops Classic Set For Sept. 10-12
At Long Beach CC--(Aug. 25, 1999)

We've already posted a few blurbs about this one, but here's another reminder: The 7th Annual Long Beach Fall Hoops Classic will be held next month, from September 10-12 at Long Beach City College.  This is a full-blown tournament, featuring some really good teams, and it gets rolling just after the opening of the NCAA Fall "open evaluation" period, which begins on September 9th and continues through the 26th. (Note:  Readers of Frank Burlison's column published yesterday might have gotten the impression that the tournament was only being held on Sept. 12th; it's actually going to be three days, starting Friday night and continuing through Sunday the 12th.. . . However, Frank was correct in that two of the three top SoCal-based teams will be playing:  Dominguez and Artesia. . . Now if only Mater Dei would show up, all three of the top teams would be there).

We spoke with Dinos last night, and it looks like the list of attendees has remained the same since we first posted an article on this year's tournament and  it's a list worth repeating.  Among the 32 teams committed to play in the event are:  1 Tough School of Basketball (Rich Prospero's team);   805 Express/adidas and 805 Express/Rim Rattler (George Albanez' teams); ABC/TPI (Mike Lewis' team); ARC-LA (Robert Icart's team, featuring Todd Tomlinson (6'-0" Sr. PG) from Moorpark); ARC-Team Dynamo (Ruben Sanchez Sr.'s team, featuring Ruben Sanchez, Jr. (5'-11" Jr. PG) from Notre Dame, Tyler Newton (6'-7" Sr. F) Burbank Burroughs, Kenny Johnson (5'-10"  Sr. PG/SG) LA High, Ryan McCormick (6'-5" Sr. SF),  Camarillo, Matt Wallman (6'-6" Jr. F) Camarillo, Matt Biernat (6'-4" Sr. SF/SG) Crespi, Casey Markovic (6'-5" Jr. SG/SF) Bell-Jeff, Zach Smith (6'-8" Sr. F) Oak Park, Donnie Williams (6'-6" Sr. F) Pasadena Marshall); The Arizona Stars I & II teams (these are Art Dye's teams); Bay Area Ballers (Nelson Washington's squad with Jair Veldhuis (6'-11" Sr. C/PF) from Mt. Tam); Belmont Shore (Dinos' own team, featuring the usual suspects, including Travon Bryant (6'-8" Sr. PF), Ellis Myles (6'-7" Sr. PF), probably Wesley Stokes (5'-11" Sr. PG), and several other top guys; BWBA (Bob Gottlieb's team); Camp Exposure (Ace Daniels' squad); Compton Magic (Etop Udo Ema is putting together a team, and we'd expect to see some of the younger, newer faces who will be playing around Compton this year); EBO/EA Sport (Mats' team, featuring DeShawn Stevenson (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) and DeShawn Anderson (6'-3" Sr. SG); On2Hoop Future Stars (Fentriss Winn's team featuring most notably Nick Booker (6'-5" Sr. SG/SF) from The Bishop's in La Jolla); Houston Hoops (Hal Pastner's team, which was coached by Arizona's own Josh Pastner this summer);  Hype Squad (Richard Isaacs' team); ICAN All-Stars (Rock Johnson's team); Inflight (Mike Livacarri's primarily Temecula Valley-based team); Inland (Elvert "Kool Aid" Perry's always strong Inland Empire contingent, but probably without some of the usual prep school big-name guys); Las Vegas Stars (Al LaRoque's team); Michigan Mustangs (Chris Grier's squad. . . no confirmation that they will be coming, but if they do, look for them at both this event and at the Pump Fall Premier as well); Portland Legends (Troy Berry's team featuring the Portland guys who don't play for Pump N Run Gold); QBL Lakewood (basically the entire Artesia team); The Hood (basically all of Compton Dominguez); Seattle Rotary I & II;  and Jamie Davis' "West Coast Academy" team.

This is an event that we look forward to attending every year, and it just seems to keep getting better and better.  If you need further information, you can contact Dinos at (310) 669-2307 or (562) 901-8592.

See you there.
