West Coast All-Stars: Second Session
Frosh Soph Game--(July 17, 1999)

We're running so far behind it's not really even funny at this point. Between running from gym to gym in Las Vegas, and slight computer malfunctions (like the dreaded Windows "dead mouse" freeze-up), we're doing reasonably well, and sitting here at Durango HS watching the preliminary games in Open Bracket play, we decided to just do some typing and try to catch up.

The second session of West Coast All-Stars ended Wednesday morning, and the last day of camp was devoted to the "Great 8" tournament, a double-elimination tournament featuring 8 minute games and a running clock.  We can't even begin to tell you which teams won the Championship and the consolation games, and certainly that's not really the point of an "exposure" camp.  Instead, the purpose is to make it through the camp, play before the assembled college coaches, and hopefully compete hard enough and well enough during the first three days to make one of the All-Star teams.

This second session, the talent among the Frosh-Sophs was not as deep as the first session, but that's to be expected, because even though there were more Frosh-Sophs, there were lots more good juniors and seniors at this session too.   Only three players made the Frosh-Soph team both sessions, David Gale (5'-11" So. PG) from Buckley, Teddy Boxberger (6'-5" So. SF) who has transferred to a school in Texas, and Franklin Matos (6'-3" So. PG) from Artesia.  We were really impressed with Jon Steffanson (6'-5" So. SG/SF) who was fresh off his trip to ABCD Camp, looking stronger and better than ever, and his shot was dropping in the game.   We also liked little D'Shon Cannon (5'-8" So. PG) from Carl Hayden in Arizona, and even though it looked like he was at times playing right on the edge of control, sometimes out of control, he's got good skills, and just needs to get more experienced, which of course will come with time.

This was a good group of Frosh-Soph players selected by the All-Star committee.  Here's the roster:

Jarrha Bolden (6'-0" So. SG) Horizon
Teddy Boxberger (6'-5" So. SF) Austin
