1999 Carson Grand Finale
Day One Results, Day Two Schedule--(July 1, 1999)

There's been one notable change in the teams playing in this tournament, and that is that Compton has now become Compton Centennial, both literally and figuratively speaking.  Compton last year had Jeremiah Thompson and Jamal Barnes, not to mention Rod Palmer as head coach, Dominique Street, George Borthwell and Gary Miles as assistants, but with Rod's transfer to Centennial as the new AD, the rest have followed, to be joined by Omar Weaver (6'-7" Sr. PF), who transferred to wherever Rod happened to be from the East Coast.

We saw Omar play in two games yesterday, first against Fontana at the Best in the West Summer Shootout, a game that Centennial lost, and then again at the Carson Grande Finale, a game that Centennial won, and Omar is good, very good, perhaps even exceptional as a potential college prospect at the three, but we're just not convinced yet that he's the top power forward, or even the top three man in SoCal just yet, at least from what we saw yesterday.  Omar is very athletic, pretty thin, and he runs the floor, but we didn't see any marvelous displays of shooting, no smothering defense, and while he can get up and dunk with ease, he didn't do it in the game.  We liked what we saw, we'd just like to get a few more looks.

Here are the scores from yesterday, the first day of pool play:

Dominguez 75, Villa Park 36
Westchester 63, Oceanview 59
Canyon Springs 54, Redondo 77
Mira Costa 37, St. Bernard 51
Verbum Dei 57, Carson 65
Serra 43, Centennial 70
Bishop Mongtomery 51, LB Wilson 35
Inglewood 66, West Torrance 44
JW North 65, Lynwood 55
