Coach "C" Officially Replaced By Meyer--(June 16, 1999)

Much has been written about Coach Lou Cvijanovich, a coaching legend who retired in March after 41 years.  Now the Coach "C" era is officially over at Oxnard Santa Clara, and the school has officially hired a new coach, Martin Meyer.

Mike Bresnahan, a staff writer for the LA Times wrote the following blurb in today's Valley/Ventura edition of the Times:

Martin Meyer has been hired as boys' basketball coach at Santa Clara High, replacing legendary Coach Lou Cvijanovich, who retired in March after 41 years.

Meyer, 39, former junior varsity basketball coach at Camarillo High, is a sergeant in the Oxnard police department, a position he plans to keep. He will be considered a walk-on coach.

Cvijanovich set a state record with 829 career victories and guided the Saints to three state championships, including the Division V title this year.  "[Meyer] brings plenty of energy to the program," said John Lorenzana, Santa Clara athletic director. "I think he's going to be great for us."  Chris Ruffinelli, junior varsity coach at St. Bonaventure High, was the other finalist for the position.

That's all we know for now.  None of the other papers, including the Ventura Star had anything posted, but we're certain that more information about coach Meyer will be printed in the coming days.  Stay tuned.
