LA Watts Summer Games
Basketball Tournaments--(May 26, 1999)

The 1999 LA Watts Summer Games will be held over four days on two separate weekends starting June 19, 20,  and June 26 & 27 at various locations throughout the inner-city. The Games are sponsored by All Sport and the LA Junior Chamber of Commers.

Chris Fudge, who is with the LA Junior Chamber of Commerce and is on the Basketball Committee for the Games gave us some of the relevant info: The Games feature track and field, and many other sports, but by far the most popular events are the two basketball tournaments, a boys tournament which this year will feature 128 teams and a girls tournament which will feature 64 teams.  This is a volunteer run event, and the preliminary rounds start the 19th and 20th of June, and the Final rounds the following weekend (26th and 27th).

The tournament is single elimination. All high school teams in the greater Southern California area are welcome. The teams need to be representative of the Fall 1999 roster (i.e. no graduating seniors are allowed). The entry fee is only $50.00 and each team will be provided a set of commemorative T-Shirts. The games will take place at 12 inner city schools with the headquarters and finals being played at LA Southwest College.

This event has a strong past and we know that the Basketball Committee and the other sponsors, and we here at SoCalHoops would like to see the history and  tradition maintained. So if you have a team that isn't playing anywhere on June 19, 20, 26 or 27, call the LA Junior Chamber of Commerce to enter. For information on the Games (i.e. locations, dates, registration forms) please contact the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce at (888) 52 LAWSG.

The Basketball Chair is a gentleman named Neal Davenport. Neal may be contacted directly at (310) 342-9858. This may be a better alternative for some schools as the games are scheduled to start very soon. Actually, the seeding committee is meeting June 7th. Adding teams after that date is possible but it starts to get messy.  You can also contact Chris Fudge, at the LA Junior Chamber of Commerce at (310) 647-3890 in the event further information is required.
