Spencer Gloger Signs Scholarhip
Agreement With UCLA--(May 24, 1999)

Jim Downs' own Bruin website is apparently still down and not functional (we hate it when servers crash), so he posted this over at College Hoops Insider.  Here's the link.  Apparently, according to Jim, Spencer Gloger (6'-6" Sr. SG/SF) who was the Orange County Player of the Year, and who was wavering between UCLA, Oregon and Princeton,  finally made up his mind sometime today, and in the process, signed a scholarship agreement with the Bruins.

As Jim correctly observed, "Gloger's commitment gives the Bruins their second recruit in less than a week who has forgone the formality of a national letter of intent. 6'8" WF Jason Kapono, an All-America selection from Artesia High School in California, signed a scholarship agreement with the Bruins on May 20.

Apparently Jim actually posted the story shortly before Gloger signed. Later in the day, Tracy Pierson at PacWestHoops reported that he spoke with Spencer, and Spencer told Tracy that he was really pleased with his decision.  And if what Tracy reported is actually a fact, then Spencer has every right to be happy:   "Gloger indicated, though, that UCLA has committed to a full, four-year scholarship," according to Tracy.  Remember, a National Letter of Intent only gets a player a one year commitment from the school and the coach cannot guarantee a re-signing (although coaches frequently can and do say that they will recommend a renewal of the scholarship for more than one year).

Geez, with negotiating skills like these, we wouldn't be surprised if Spencer and Jason end up representing Lavin during his next contract negotiations, which should be just about the time each of these four-year UCLA program players is ready to graduate.
