Chris Burgess Reportedly Commits To Utah--(May 21, 1999)

In an article entitled "UCLA 1, Utah 1"  the Deseret News.com the online version of the daily Salt Lake City newspaper is reporting that Chris Burgess (6'-10" So. F/C), a graduate of Woodbridge High in Irvine, has committed to Utah.  Burgess had also visited UCLA recently and was considering transferring there, but decided to play for coach Rick Majerus instead. Of course, Utah was also pretty high on Jason Kapono's list, but faded in the last few days, about as fast as UCLA faded on Burgess' list too.

"I feel good about going to Utah and playing for coach Majerus," Burgess told the Deseret News. "I just know he's going make me a better player. I feel real comfortable with the players and coaches there. I also love Salt Lake and have a lot of family there."

According to the paper, "Burgess took his time announcing his decision despite indicating Utah was his first choice more than a week ago. He has enthusiastically spoke [geez, maybe that's the way they talk in Salt Lake. . . we'd have said "spoken" ] of improving his game under Majerus and said he would look forward to playing with players he knows such as Britton Johnsen and Jon Carlisle, who will return from LDS missions next year. He said his decision was delayed by the death of his grandfather (the funeral was Thursday). While he was in Utah last weekend Burgess met players such as Hanno Mottola, Trent Whiting, Gary Colbert and Phil Cullen and said he looks forward to playing with them. Burgess had been extended an offer by Utah, but apparently was intrigued by the possibility of playing for UCLA near his hometown of Irvine."

The commitment hasn't been officially confirmed by Utah, but we'd expect to hear something from Majerus or the Utah athletic department (via the official Utah website) sometime this weekend or early next week.
