Best In The West Summer
Shootouts At Artesia High--(May 28, 1999)

Wow, it's summer already.  As soon as the Memorial Day tournaments conclude, and as soon as final exams are over, it will be time for June, which means it's time for high school tournaments.  And one of the best is the annual Best in the West Summer Shootout at Artesia HS, which actually is two different tournaments, both at Artesia High School on consecutive weeks, featuring many of the top teams and top players in SoCal.

Teams participating include Long Beach Poly (Wesley Stokes, Joe Travis, Jonathan Harper, Markee White),Redondo (Andrew Zahn, Walter White, Dijon Thompson, Dylan Mathis Keith Ellison,  Sam Chance, Andrew Morris, Andre Jones),   Artesia (Jack Martinez, Amaury Fernandez, Ryan Reyes, Franklin Matos, Andre Hazel, Ryan Mueller, Samual Nadeau), Mayfair (Josh Childress, Edwin Draughn), Serra (Aerick Sanders, Doyle Cole), Dominguez (Tyson Chandler, Keith Brooks, Keilon Fortune, Sherman Gay, Steve Moore, Larry Johnson), Long Beach Jordan (Travon Bryant), Upland (Demarcus Williams), Crossroads (Isaiah Fox), Harvard-Westlake (Russell Lakey, Eric Geffner), Santa Margarita (Ryan Stacey, Kevin Stacey), Bishop Montgomery (Brian Pruitt , Errick Craven, Derrick Craven, DeVaughn Peace, Kenny D'Oyen, Leland Dodd, David Colbert), and many other well known and soon-to-be well known players.

This article will preview both installments of th Best in the West  Tournaments, Tournament No. 1 and Tournament No. 2.


Best in the West Shooutout Tournament #1

What: Best in the West Summer Shootout No. 1
When: June 23-27
Where: Artesia High School
Who: 12 teams, 4 pools

The first tournament takes place from June 23-27 and will feature three days of pool play (6/23-6/25) followed by two days of playoffs (6/26-6/27). Here are the schedules, pools and brackets for the Best In The West Shootout #1, June 23-27:

Each of the top two teams in each pool will advance to the Championship playoff bracket, and the bottom two teams will advance to the Runner-up playoff bracket. Each bracket will play single elimination.

The semifinals in the Championship bracket are on 6/27 at 1:30 and 2:45 p.m. while the semifinals in the Runner-up bracket will take place on the 27th also at 11:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. The Runner-up final is on the 27th at 5:15 p.m., while   the final in the Championship bracket will take place on the 27th at 7:00 p.m.


Best in the West Shooutout Tournament #2

What: Best in the West Summer Shootout No. 2
When: June 23-27
Where: Artesia High School
Who: 16 teams, 5 pools

As noted above, this one takes place June 28 through July 2 at Artesia High School.  This is a slightly larger tournament, but will be just as competitive as the first installment of the Summer BIW, in fact, maybe even more so.

Again, top two teams advance to the Championship Bracket for single elimination play and the bottom two teams drop to the Runner-up bracket, also for single elimination play.

The semifinals in the Championship bracket are at 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. on July 2, and the semis in the Runner-up brackets will be at 4:00 p.m. and 5:15 p.m. also on the 2nd.   The Championship Final is at 7:30 p.m. while the runner-up final is at 8:45 p.m.

Artesia HS is located at 12108 E. Del Amo Blvd., Lakewood, CA 90715.  The school is located just off the 605 Fwy.    Exit at Del Amo Blvd., and head east on Del Amo.  The school is located on the north side of the street, at the corner of Norwalk Blvd. and Del Amo.
