CSUN Signs Lakewood's Lionel Benjamin--(May 6, 1999)

Cal State Northridge has announced that it has signed its third men's basketball player for next season: Lionel Benjamin (6'-3" Gr. He attended the Naval Academy Prep School in Rhode Island following his graduation from high school, wherehe averaged 17 ppg and 6 rpg. Lionel is strong, quick, loves to dunk, and has a pretty good shooting touch out to about 17'.  "Lionel is a young man we have recruited since he was at Lakewood High and monitored his progress," Northridge Coach Bobby Braswell told the LA Times. "He is a tremendous athlete with good defensive skills and is a great finisher on the fast break."

Most recently, Lionel has played with both the Pump N Run I and II teams, doing double duty, and  playing with guys like Lou Wright (6'-6" Jr. SG) from Westchester, Branduinn Fullove (6'-5" Jr. SG) Simi Valley, Aerick Sanders (6'-10" Jr. C) from Serra, Montel Duhon (6'-4" Jr. SG) from Venice, Errick and Derrick Craven (6'-2" So. PG/SG's) from Bishop Montgomery, David Gale (5'-11" Fr. PG) from Buckley, and Jonathan Sanders (6'-7" Jr. PG) from Colorado.

CSUN has now signed three players, and Benjamin will join Marco McCain (6'-3" So. G) from Cerritos College and Craig Calloway (6'-1" Sr. PG) from  Long Beach Jordan next season.  CSUN has at least one more scholarship open and Braswell told the Times he expects to sign one more player.
