WSS Scholastic Hoops Jam Rosters--(April 28, 1999)

As noted in our last article, we got a press release and the full rosters for the inaugural Warehouse Shoe Sale Scholastic Hoops Jam basketball benefit which will be held on Saturday, May 1st at Los Angeles Southwest College. Some great players, and they are not calling it an "All-Star" game apparently because if it was considered as such it might affect player eligibility at the NCAA level. We've been assured by the organizers that everything is kosher and these guys know what they're doing, so we're not too worried about it either.

Here are the two underclass boys' rosters.  Some pretty exciting players too, but clearly there's been a mistake and the organizers confused Rodney Anderson, a senior, with Devrin Anderson a junior, and the rosters we were supplied with had them switched. They'll probably straighten it out by game time. Here are the rosters:

City Section Underclass Boys (Los Angeles) Team Southern Section Underclass Boys' Team
Edmund "EJ" Harris (6'-2" Jr. PG) Crenshaw
Tommie Johnson (6'-4" Jr. SG) Crenshaw
Evan Burns (6'-5" Fr. SF) Fairfax
Jason Morrissette (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) Fairfax
Craig Smith (6'-6" So. F) Fairfax
Mario Roberts (6'-1" Jr. PG/SG) Manual Arts
Steve McMaryion (6'-4" Jr. SG/SF) Palisades
Rodney Anderson (6'-1" Jr.* G) Washington **
Eugene Moore (6'-6" Jr. F) Washington
Chad Bell (7'-0" So. C) Westchester*
Lou Wright (6'-6" Jr. SG) Westchester

** as noted above we think Rodney being listed
here is a mistake, since he's a senior, and no doubt
organizers meant to list Devrin Anderson from
Crossroads here instead (see below)

* the roster  we were given also listed Chad as a
freshman, but that's not correct. He's a soph.

Andre Hazel (6'-0" Jr. PG) Artesia
Derrick Craven (6'-2" So. SG/PG) Bishop Montg.
Errick Craven (6'-2" So. PG/SG) Bishop Montg.
Jamaal Williams (6'-6" So. F) Corona Centennial
Scott Borchart (6'-9" So. F/C) Chaminade
Keith Brooks (6'-7" Jr. PF) Domginuez
Tyson Chandler (7'-0" So. C) Dominguez
Adon Baines (5'-8" Jr. G) Hawthorne
Josh Childress (6'-4" So. SG) Mayfair
Edwin Draughn (6'-5" So. SF) Mayfair
Andrew Zahn (6'-9" Jr. F) Redondo Union
Travon Bryant (6'-7" Jr. PF) L.B. Jordan
Jonathan Harper (6'-4" So. SG) L.B. Poly
Geoffrey Clayton (6'-4" So. SG/SF) Magnolia
Felipe Williams (6'-3" Jr. SG/SF) Crossroads

As noted earlier, the senior boys' teams will be coached by Baron Davis of UCLA, a Santa Monica Crossroads grad, and probably soon to be of the NBA,   who will coach the Southern Section, and his fellow UCLA teammate, Billy Knight, a Westchester High grad who will coach the City Section team.  The rosters we got didn't list height, but did list GPA and colleges that the players have committed to play at next year.  Here are the rosters for the boys' senior teams. Please note that where the roster has a college indicated, in the case of most we've just kept it the way it was sent to us. But in the case of a few (Ronald Johnson & Edward Estaven notably) we've put in the colleges we believe they will be attending.  As for Ronald Cass at Kansas, well, we haven't heard about any basketball scholarship (at least not yet) so if he's going there, it will be as a regularly enrolled student.  Maybe Roy Williams though should take a look at him, because he's really a fine player and would definitely be a great walk-on (or a scholarhip player at many other schools).  We also have heard conflicting reports about where Larry Dillingham will actually go next year, but for now, they're listing LB State.  Here's the City roster, followed by the Southern Section roster:

Tickets will be available at the door.  We have no idea how much they will be (the press release doesn't say) but they probably won't be too expensive (we're guessing between $5 and $10), and for three games, that's cheap.  If you need further information on the games, or want to know about the banquet tomorrow night (Thursday, April 29) at 6:00 p.m. at the Torrance Holiday Inn, call Kenneth Miller at (310) 715-9300.
