USF Announces The Signing
Of Pomona's Shomari Sarpy--(April 21, 1999)

The USF Media Relations Department today has announced the signing of two players, junior college point guard Chris Barideaux and Pomona's Shomari Sarpy (6'-9" Sr. F) to letters of intent to play basketball at the University of San Francisco next fall.  We've edited (i.e., rearranged) portions of the official press release issued today.  Here's the portion relating to the signing of Shomari:

Head coach Phil Mathews announced the signing of junior college point guard Chris Barideaux and 6-9 freshman forward Shomari Sarpy to letters of intent to play basketball at the University of San Francisco next fall.

USF will have a total of six new players on the team next year including senior redshirt center Kenyon Jones (formerly of Cal-Berkeley), early signees Darryl Tucker, Shammell Stallworth and John Cox, and Sarpy and Barideaux.

Sarpy was an all-conference selection at Pomona High School where he averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds per game. "Shomari is a quick and athletic player who shoots the ball well for a big man and is an outstanding shotblocker."

Overall, Coach Mathews is very pleased in his recruiting class. "We have added greatly to our team for next year," he said. We should be strong up front with the additions of Jones, Tucker and Sarpy, and the backcourt will get a big boost with Cox, Stallworth, and Barideaux. With the improvement of our young players and with a healthy LyRyan Russell we should compete well in an improved West Coast Conference."

Here's the balance of the press related to the signing of Barideaux:

Barideaux (5-10, 170 lbs.) was the starting point guard for Western Nebraska C.C. and led them to the NJCAA tournament for the second straight season, where the Cougars placed seventh. He averaged 8.8 points, 6.1 assists and 1.8 steals while shooting 49.5% from the floor, 41.4% from three-point range. Prior to attending junior college, Chris all-district at New Iberia Senior High School is New Iberia, Louisiana (a suburb of Baton Rouge) where he averaged 13 points and 9 assists per game as a senior.

"Chris is an excellent point guard who will challenge LyRyan Russell for the starting slot," said Mathews. "He is an excellent ball-handler and floor leader."

Congratulations to Shomari Sarpy and USF on a great incoming freshman class.
