adidas Double Pump Easter Tournament:
Second Day Results--(April 11, 1999)

Like yesterday, on Saturday, we saw so much basketball starting at 9:00 a.m. and concluding well after 10:30 p.m. that we are a bit bleary eyed.   We just don't have the time right now to write a lot, so we're going to limit this to just the results from Saturday, and maybe a couple of observations about games and players along the way.   The big news of the day was that Pump N Run I again managed to get a big win against Top Prospects, and so Pump N Run advanced to the semifinal tomorrow (Sunday) at 2:00 p.m. where they will meet KYBA, which defeated the Oakland Solidiers in the round of 12 to advance.  Pump N Run I featured most of the same guys as on Friday, including Lou Wright, Andrew Zahn, Branduinn Fullove, Aerick Sanders, Errick Craven who moved over from Pump N Run II to help out while brother Derrick played for P&R II, Jonathon Sanders, Antoine Durrell,  and on Saturday, they also had Wesley Stokes from Long Beach Poly, as well as Travon Bryant who had just had his wisdom teeth pulled on Friday and looked questionable first thing in the morning when we saw him. On the other side, for Dart Stamps' TPI team was E.J. Harris, Chad Bell, Tommy Johnson, Keith Everidge, Jason McKinney, Jason Morrissette and others.   Pump pretty much led the whole way, finishing ahead 71-57.  At the same time, at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, the Pump N Run II team started out having just as good a game against Friends of Hoop Orange, which is really the FOH I team, with Pump II leading by as many as 16 in the first half, but FOH closed the gap to 11 at the half.  And then, in a stunning 7 minute run in the second half, during which time all of the guards who had played during the first half and had so effectively moved the ball and distributed to others to score sat, Pump N Run II went absolutely stone-cold, and they made no defensive or offensive adjustments at all to the FOH attack, going scoreless for 7 minutes.  So going from what had been an 16 point first half lead, Pump II ended up losing by 23 points, a 39 point swing in less than 16 minutes, and frankly, in our humble opinion. . . well, we'll just reserve our  judgment about what we think might have happened, because in the long run, it really doesn't make much difference, as the FOH team played spectacularly.  More on them later when we get some time after the weekend.  But they do have some big-time athletes and are one of the most well-coached squads we saw at the entire tournament.

EBO played a very close and hard fought game agaisnt the Alley Cats, a team composed largely of San Diego guys from a lot of D-III schools, and so it was with some relish that Vonn Webb, DeShawn Stevenson's high school coach (who is one of the best coaches we know, and who is certainly capable and deserving of a college job if anyone out there needs a good assistant) was looking forward to scouting some of the players from USDHS and San Diego Lincoln.    EBO managed the win behind some very atheltic play from DeShawn Stevenson, great shooting and drives by Luke Whitehead, and strong play from the rest, but then an hour later EBO met their demise in the form of QBL, which knocked off EBO 87-80.  Of course, later in the evening, QBL was beaten by the Michigan Mustangs 74-66, and it's looking more and more like it will be the Mustangs and Pump N Run I for the finals.   Pump II will finish in the top ten, but it would have been a lot of fun to see the two squads match up.

As we keep saying, we'll have lots more in the coming days, as soon as we can sort it all out.  For now, here are the scores from Saturday, April 10, 1999 at the adidas Double Pump Easter Tournament:
