CIF State Tourney: SoCal Division V
Regional Quarterfinal Details--(March 10, 1999)

Well, there was a lot more coverage of this Division than there was for D-IV. Is there a team anywhere in the State that can beat Santa Clara?  We'll find out tomorrow night as Price tries.   El Cajon Christian and Cambria Coast Union also both advanced and will meet in the other semifinal.   If you searched around a bit, then you found most of what we did, but for those who missed them, or didn't get the complete scoring, here are the details of the games played last night in the Quarterfinals (First Round) of the Southern Regionals in the State Championship basketball tournament.  Here's what we know:

Upper Bracket

Santa Clara 86, La Jolla Country Day 43

Nick Jones scored 26 points, and BJ Ward scored 24 and the Saints Clara scored an 86-43 victory over La Jolla Country Day in the first round of the Southern Regional Division V boys' basketball tournament at Santa Clara. Top-seeded Santa Clara (27-3) gained special satisfaction by defeating a team from the San Diego area. Last year, the Saints were eliminated in the regional tournament by a lopsided loss to San Diego Horizon. La Jolla Country Day (20-8) was never in the game. Santa Clara allowed only five points in the first and third quarters, en route to a 66-26 lead after three quarters. The Saints were efficient on offense, making 21 of 29 shots in the first half. And they were stingy on defense, allowing Country Day to score on consecutive possessions only once until the fourth quarter. Ward and Jones took turns topping each other, the 6-foot-1 Ward throwing down a dunk in the second quarter, the 6-4 Jones making consecutive three-pointers in the third quarter. Country Day was too young--two freshmen and a sophomore were in the lineup--and too small to mount a challenge. Santa Clara Coach Lou Cvijanovich extended the California record for career victories, winning his 825th game in 41 seasons.

LA Price 71, Pasadena Poly 67 (OT)

Price (27-2), was a 71-67 overtime winner over Pasadena Poly, in a second-round game Thursday night. Othel Johnson scored 29 points and made the go-ahead basket with 1:14 left in overtime to give the Knights (28-2) the victory at Inglewood. Matt Easterlin scored 21 points for Poly. Santa Clara will host Price on Thursday night. Price defeated Antelope Valley Christian, 77-60, last week to win the Southern Section Division V-A championship. Price, located in South-Central Los Angeles, is an athletic team that will have a definite height advantage over Santa Clara. Othel Johnson, a 6-5 forward, scored 20 points for Price against Antelope Valley Christian. Pasadena Poly's Koko Archibong finished his high school career with 93 victories, two unbeaten regular seasons, and two trips to the CIF-Southern Section Division V-AA title game. With the game tied, 61-61, with 3:14 left in the overtime, Archibong, Poly's talented inside player, excused himself from the court during a stop in play. Archibong was holding his side and stomach area and walked tentatively into the locker room. He returned to the bench with 19 seconds left, just as Price's Othel Johnson was putting the game away with a free throw that gave his club a 69-65 lead. During a timeout, Archibong never moved from the bench to join the huddle. Instead, he sat motionless with his hands wrapped around his head. His night was over, and he finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. But the Panthers, who turned in a gutty effort all night, still weren't ready to throw in the towel. Matt Lawler's bank shot with 10 seconds left cut the deficit to two points, however, Andrew Howard iced the game for Price (28-2) with two free throws with eight seconds left. Pasadena Poly ended its stellar campaign with a 27-2 record. The club won its first 27 games this season before falling to Santa Clara in last Friday's Division V-AA championship game. The Archibong-Roberts era saw Pasadena Poly go 93-19 over four years. The team also went unbeaten in the regular season two seasons ago. With both Archibong and Ryan Haden saddled with illness, guards Matt Easterlin and Lawler picked up the scoring slack. Easterlin had 21 points; Lawler posted 13 points. Pasadena Poly, which trailed for most of regulation, used a 20-6 stretch to turn an eight-point deficit into a six-point lead at 58-52 with 2:45 left in the game. Poly sophomore reserve forward Kirk Herald, a big key in the fourth quarter with three clutch baskets, missed a 15-foot runner at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime.

Lower Bracket

El Cajon Christian 55, Immanuel 54

It came down to one shot, and Immanuel knew who would take it. "Set screens, find Casey, get Casey open," coach John Thiesen said during a timeout with 21 seconds left and the Eagles trailing host El Cajon Christian 55-54. Casey Case got his shot, a 15-footer. It missed, and Immanuel's improbable comeback ended in a Southern California boys' Division V quarterfinal basketball loss Tuesday. The Eagles' night started on a bad note when Brett Dedwey, the team's leading rebounder and third-leading scorer, injured his ankle in warmups and did not play. It got worse, as Immanuel (19-8) shot 4 for 25 in the first half. Christian (24-5) led 49-37 midway through the fourth quarter before Immanuel (18-8) went on an 11-2 run to close to 51-48. Kurt Thiesen's three-pointer with 37 seconds left tied the score at 54 before Christian's Nick Gonzales hit the winning free throw with 21 seconds left.

Cambria Coast Union 74, Antelope Valley Christian 50

The Eagles (21-4) finished the season with a loss on the road to the Central Coast Section champion. Coast Union is 24-3.Matt Brody scored 16 points and Drew Brause added 13 points for Coast Union at home Early-game jitters quickly disappeared Tuesday night as Coast Union advanced to the semifinals of the Southern California Regional playoffs. The Broncos, after throwing away their first possesssion of the game, trailed 6-4 before turning things around. In the end it was a 74-50 blowout against Antelope Valley Christian. Coast Union went on a 12-1 run to erase its early falters and never looked back. A Drew Brause three-pointer gave the Broncos a 9-6 lead and an edge they'd never lose. "Once we started getting into a rhythm, we started to play the way we can play," said Bronco coach Barry Silvers. The victory sets up a semifinal showdown with Christian of El Cajon, which edged Immanuel 55-54. Point guard Matt Brody led Coast with 16 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. But the Bronco attack was balanced across the board. Brause added 13 points with three three-pointers and Owen Main stepped up inside with 11 points. Main and Brian Robinson ( six points ) had their hands full with Antelope Valley center Peter Beaudin. Beaudin scored 17 points and collected a handful of blocks. "He's probably one of the best centers we've seen," said Silvers. In other words, a good test for the Broncos as they go on in the state bracket. Brody really got things going for Coast when he grabbed a steal near midcourt and went the other way for two. That gave Coast a 12-point lead ( 23-11 ) with a minute to go in the first quarter. Roberto Covey ( 9 points ) opened the second quarter with another steal and two and the Broncos led 40-24 at the half. Coast built a 20-point lead early in the second half and led by as much as 26 late in the game. Tim May ( 7 points ) sank a pair of free throws with 5:18 left to give the Broncos a 66-40 edge. Coast also led by 26 ( 74-48 ) on Julian Maiwald's three-pointer with next to no time remaining. Antelope Valley also got 17 points out of Matthew Nurse, who spent most of the night across the court from Brody in a battle of skilled point guards. Coast held Jamal Flanagan -- averaging 21 points a game-- to just two. "I think No. 10 ( Nurse ) and No. 40 ( Beaudin ) were the two guys we had to worry about," said Silvers.
