In & Around SoCal--(Feb. 4, 1999)

We've been running way behind. We admit it. There's been this little thing hanging around, buzzing in our ears most of the week called work, but we've managed to swat that fly after chasing him from Monday until now, and so we gathered our notes and have been able to do a little catching up tonight.  Of course it meant that we'd have to miss the UCLA game, but hey, the game's televised, right?

There were not a lot of games played Monday night. We already posted our review of the Chaminade v. Harvard-Westlake game, and we were wrong: Clarence Mitchell didn't have 6 three's, he had 5.  But otherwise, we were correct:   He played a hell of a game.  Others who played great on Monday night were Ronald Johnson of South Gate who scored 36 points and had 20 rebounds, and Jason Kapono of Artesia who followed up his performance Saturday against Compton at the SoCal Basketball Classic with a 34 point game against La Mirada Monday night, which also saw him grab 14 rebounds.  And Sandy Fletcher of Inglewood also had a great game Monday against Peninsula, getting either 29 points (if you believe the Daily Breeze) or 30 points (if you believe the Los Angeles Times).  Frankly we're inclined to go with the Times numbers because, no offense to the Daily Breeze intended, this is not the first time we've seen differences in the numbers with the Breeze being lower.  Why the difference?   Probably because when it comes to South Bay schools, the Times gets its information when the schools call the scores in, so the numbers are usually coming from the winning coach, in this case Pat Roy of Inglewood or one of his assistants.  The Breeze tends to go with the numbers that it's own beat writers keep for scores during the games.   Not that there's anything wrong with that, because they usually are better than the students keeping score at getting rebounds, assists, steals and blocks. . . but when it comes to points, we'll take the coach any day.

In any event, here's what happened Monday, February 1, 1999 in and around the Southern & City Sections:

Bay League

Inglewood 75, Peninsula 65--The Sentinels (23-3, 10-1), who got a game-high 29 points from Sandy Fletcher, dominated the rebounding category and stayed in first place with the win over the Panthers (14-9, 6-4) at Peninsula. Skip Esene added 20 points for Inglewood, which made seven three-pointers. Bo Palmer led the Panthers with 22 points, including five three-pointers.

Redondo 66, South Torrance 44--Led by Andrew Zahn's game-high 26 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks, the Sea Hawks (16-6, 9-2) defeated the host Spartans (0-10 in league). Walter White tallied 22 points and 12 rebounds for Redondo, which broke the game open by outscoring South, 26-10, in the fourth quarter. The Spartans were paced by Ryan Tamaka's 10 points.

Mission League

Alemany 65, Crespi 61--Devin Montgomery had 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, and the Indians took control early by outscoring Crespi, 14-2, in the first quarter en route to a Mission League victory at L.A. Baptist.   Alemany (14-6, 7-2) extended its lead to 38-21 by halftime in handing Crespi (15-7, 5-4) its third consecutive loss. Bryson Atkins scored 11 points, including three three-pointers, in the second quarter for the Indians. He finished with 16 points.

Notre Dame 63, St. Francis 41--Cody Pearson had 20 points, 15 rebounds and a career-high 11 assists to lead the Knights (8-15, 2-7) over St. Francis (9-12, 1-7) in a Mission League game at Notre Dame.

Chaminade 80, Harvard Westlake 71--  We've already done our own report on this game, but just for the sake of getting the stats correct, here's the review (edited) of the game which appeared in the Daily News. . . or was it the LA Times?  We forget which, but in any event, here's another view of the game: "With wins over its next three opponents, Chaminade (18-3, 7-1) will earn at least a tie for the title before taking the floor against Alemany. On Monday, Clarence Mitchell scored 21 points and had a career-high five 3-pointers.  Chaminade is beginning to get impact contributions from a number of different players. On Monday it was Mitchell, who took over stretches of the game with his outside shooting and athletic drives to the basket. Over the last few weeks, players like Ryan Arceo, Darren Tarlow, Jim Lefebvre and J.J. Todd have all played important supporting roles to star Scott Borchart and talented point guard Cayce Cook. Mitchell has waited a long time to get this chance. He sat on the bench for the varsity team the last two years, patiently waiting his turn. Now that he's getting minutes, he's become an important player.  On Monday, he hit a number of big shots to keep Harvard-Westlake at arm's length. Chaminade controlled the game throughout. The Wolverines didn't help their cause with a handful of missed layups. Borchart finished with 19 points and eight rebounds. Cook had 12 points and eight assists and Arceo added 10. Russell Lakey had 24 points to lead Harvard-Westlake."

Ocean League

West Torrance 43, Mira Costa 41-- Travis Miller made a layup with seven seconds remaining in overtime his only basket of the game as West Torrance defeated Mira Costa, 43-41, in an Ocean League contest Monday at West Torrance. The Warriors (16-6, 9-1) moved into first place over the Mustangs (14-8, 8-2), who missed a shot near the buzzer. Chris Kettler led the Warriors with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists, and Keith Allen finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. No Mira Costa player scored in double figures. Danny Lubinsky scored a team-high nine points, including the Mustangs' only three points of overtime.

El Segundo 61, Beverly Hills 38-- The Eagles (10-12, 4-6) outscored the Normans (4-18, 3-7) 20-6 in the fourth quarter behind an 11-0 run to win on the road. Matt Tigani led all scorers with 16 points on four three-pointers, and he added seven assists and four steals despite flu. J.T. Leitch had 13 points for El Segundo. Charles Talanoa added 11.

San Gabriel Valley League

Lynwood 68, Warren 60--Senior guard Gary Lenoir scored eight of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, as the Knights (14-8, 4-2) used a 17-4 run in the last five minutes to defeat the Bears (18-4, 3-3). Senior forward Keyawn Floyd led five Lynwood players in double figures with 21 points, while Lenoir added eight rebounds and 11 assists. Warren, which led the Knights, 56-51, with 5:20 left in the game, was paced by Branko Kovacic's 20 points.

Santa Fe League

Murphy 78, Bell-Jeff 73-- Mike Yildiz scored 27 points for host Bell-Jeff (9-13, 2-6) in a Santa Fe League game.

Mary Star 62, Cathedral 61--Rudy Brown scored 20 points and made a layup with five seconds left to lift the Stars (7-13, 3-6) to a victory over the first-place Phantoms. Allen Danielson led the Stars with a game-high 27 points. With 35 seconds left, Brown had made two free throws to cut the Phantoms' lead to 61-60, then the Phantoms missed the first of a one-and-one free-throw chance, setting the stage for Brown's final heroics.

Suburban League

Mayfair 77, Bellflower 52--Sophomore forward Josh Childress tied his career-high with 31 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the Monsoons (17-6, 7-2) past the visiting Buccaneers. Childress, who made six of seven 3-pointers, was aided by junior forward Jeff Bonds, who recorded 16 points and a game-high 18 rebounds for Mayfair. Taku Muradzikwa led Bellflower with 18 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome Childress, who converted all five of his field goal attempts in the fourth quarter for 13 points.

Artesia 97, La Mirada 36-- Senior forward Jason Kapono had another great game for the Pioneers (21-2, 9-0), scoring 31 points with 14 rebounds and eight assists in the victory over the Matadores. Artesia, which outscored La Mirada, 36-0, during an 8-minute span in the second and third quarters, increased its Suburban League winning streak to 54.
