Almont League Championship: San Gabriel Wins,
Creates Three Way Tie For First--(Feb. 13, 1999)

The Almont League is a six team league and thus, under CIF Rules, gets three automatic slots for the playoffs.  We weren't there last night, but evidently three teams finished tied for third, and one of them, San Gabriel, by beating Schurr, managed to win a share of it's first ever league champinoship in any sport since 1976.  Here's an e-mail we received from someone who did witness the game and who's familiar with the situation:

San Gabriel, 5-4 coming into the game versus Schurr (6-3) needed a win to gain a tie with Schurr for the league championship. If San Gabriel won, then the winner of the Mark Keppel-Alhambra would also finish at 6-4 to make a three- way tie for first place. There would be no denying the Matadors on this day as they raced out to a 24-6 first quarter lead and never looked back as they easily defeated the Spartans 75-47. The Matadors were lead by 5'7" Junior Guard Martin Del Toro with 26 points. It is the first league title of any kind since 1976 for the Matadors. "We were just not going to be denied," said San Gabriel coach Jon Keller. "We knew coming into the last two games that we had to beat both Mark Keppel and Schurr to get a share of the title. So the boys played their butts off and took care of business on the court."

Congratulations to San Gabriel from SoCalHoops.
