J.W. North 85, Corona 71--Derek Mgbeke, who didn't start because of a sprained right ankle, came off the bench to score 23 points to spark Riverside North (20-5) past Corona (11-15) in a Division I-A first-round playoff game. North will play at Oxnard Hueneme at a site to be determined Tuesday. Mgbeke entered the game with 3:16 left in the first quarter. He scored seven points in the fourth quarter as North broke open a tight game. North outscored Corona 22-11 over the final 4:43 of the game. Damon Knight (23 points) and Cyrus Regalado (21) helped Corona play North tough until the fourth quarter. Knight converted a three-point play with 5:41 left in the game to cut North's lead to 63-60.  CORONA (71) -- Regalado 21, Bello 13, Rikansrud 2, Knight 18, Ibbetson 8, Valentine 7, Neal 2. Santa Barbara 68, Hueneme 54--Santa Barbara High used their huge physical size advantage in the paint to pound the Vikings, 68-54, in a CIF Division I-A first-round matchup Friday night. Hueneme could not handle the inside tandem of Sean Kelley and Craig Christ. The two seniors each had 11 rebounds, most of which came on the offensive end. The 6-8 Kelley used his height advantage to also lead the Dons with 19 points. Christ could not be stopped no matter where he shot on the floor, drilling two critical 3-pointers in the second quarter and finishing off four layups. Kelley and Christ's exploits were even bigger considering that Santa Barbara had to do without the services of star Tony Freeman for most of the contest. Freeman has been sidelined with a calf injury. The 6-4 senior did attempt to play, but could not handle the pressure put on his leg. The Dons, who had lost three of their last four games controlled the game from the outset, opening a 13-3 lead. Santa Barbara muscled the ball inside to Brent Williams, who scored nine of the Dons first 13 points. Forward Carlos Bailey was the only Hueneme player to make a field goal in the first four minutes. Christ and Kelley took over at this juncture. The duo combined for eight points in the last two minutes of the first period to extend Santa Barbara's lead to 26-9. Kelley put the fans in awe with four minutes to play in the second quarter. After bringing down an offensive board on a Bryce Maloney miss, the senior spun away from defenders and slapped the ball against the backboard for a layup. On the ensuing Dons' possession, Kelley would make up for two misses from the charity stripe by Christ with a tip-in to put the lead at 35-13. Christ made some highlights of his own in the period. The forward hit two NBA-length 3-pointers to get his teammates on their feet. After a long rest due to the jersey retirement of Dons' great Don Ford at halftime, Hueneme looked to see if it could catch Santa Barbara off guard. It didn't work. The lead stayed around 20 points, with Maloney putting the Dons lead at 22, 49-27, with a beautiful left-handed jump shot in the key. Hueneme made a frantic effort to get back into the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring Santa Barbara 20-16, but it was too little, too late. Dwight Norman scored nine points in the quarter for the Vikings, including a 3-pointer. Williams finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while Maloney scored a season-high 11 points while going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Norman and Johnie Williams each scored 13 points for Hueneme. Santa Barbara will now face off against No. 4 seed J. W. North Tuesday night. A coin toss today will determine where the game will be played. HUENEME - Bailey 12, Norman 13, Williams 13, Garcia 7, Luna 2, Hardy 4, Watkins 1, Thomspson 2. Totals 20 10-20 54. SANTA BARBARA - Christ 18, Shelton 2, Williams 12, Kelley 19, Maloney 11, Burke 3, Petersen 1, Qadri 2. Totals 25 14-23 68. 3-point goals-H 2 (Bailey, Norman), SB 4 (Christ 2, Kelley, Burke). Total fouls-H 13, SB 16. Fouled out-None

San Clemente 72, Marina 60--Sparked by its tenacious full-court defense and timely shooting, the Tritons opened the CIF Southern Section Division IA playoffs with a 72-60 victory over Marina on Friday at Marina High. San Clemente (17-9) advances to the second round, where it will face Pacific of San Bernardino on Tuesday at San Clemente High. Pacific defeated Silverado of Victorville on Friday, 100-90. San Clemente's defense caused havoc with Marina all night, forcing the Vikings (16-11) into 20 turnovers.  The Tritons picked apart Marina's defense behind the inside-outside attack of senior Ben Straley and junior Brian George. Straley poured in 20 points, which included six three-pointers, while George added a career-high 23 points to go with his
team-high 12 rebounds. Senior Mitch Pierce also had a solid night, posting a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, and added eight assists. Holmes said he felt San Clemente's shooting ultimately won them the game.  San Clemente turned Marina inside out in the first round of the Division I-A boys' basketball playoffs Friday at Marina.  Junior forward Brian George muscled his way for 23 points and senior guard Ben Straley (5'-10" Sr. SG) made six three-pointers to lead the Tritons to a 72-60 victory.   San Clemente (18-8), the third-place team from the South Coast League, hosts San Bernardino Pacific on Tuesday.  Straley converted two three-pointers and scored eight of his 20 points in the second quarter, when San Clemente outscored the Vikings, 22-11, to take a 12-point halftime lead. Straley, who was six for nine from three-point range, felt confident before the game, despite missing 14 consecutive three-point attempts coming in.   Straley became familiar to his South Coast League opponents after making as many as eight three-pointers in a game earlier in the season. Marina, the second place team from the Sunset League, discovered Straley's potent set shot the hard way. Marina's poor shooting and ball handling were also factors in the first half. The Vikings (17-10) made just 11 of 30 shots in the opening half and committed 13 turnovers, compared to five for San Clemente.  Senior forward Mitch Pierce scored eight of his 11 points in the third quarter as the Tritons extended their lead to 15. Marina closed the gap to 10 early in the fourth quarter, but George scored nine points down the stretch to hold Marina back.   Scot Austin scored 16 points and Jeff Hung had nine, all on three-pointers, for Marina.

Pacific 100, Silverado 90-- No details of the game were available to us. Pacific now advances to play San Clemente, which beat Marina.   The second round game will be played February 23, at a site to be determined.

Simi Valley 81, Saugus 61-- Branduinn Fullove didn't play due to an ankle injury, but Simi didn't need him as they cruised to a first round win in Division I-A playoffs. The third-seeded Pioneers forced 28 turnovers, including 20 in the first half, and coasted most of the way.  Rafael Berumen had 23 points, Brett Michel scored 20, and Dustin Villepigue scored 8 in the win over Saugus.  For Saugus, they end the season with a 14-13 record.  Simi forward Tony Ward added 10 off the bench.  The Pioneers opened a 19-7 lead after one quarter, stretched it to 41-19 by halftime and led by as many as 29.  Fullove expects to be back for Simi Valley's second-round game Tuesday night and Bradshaw said the team will need him. The Pioneers will play Troy at a site to be determined.  Saugus (14-13) didn't have a starter taller than 6-4 senior Jerome Edwards and he sat out much of the game in foul trouble and finished with only four points.  The Centurions were led by Nic Echevestre with 26 points and seven rebounds, and Kurt DeMaio with 18 points, including four three-point baskets.  Simi will meet the Jerry Inzunza-led Troy team on Tuesday night at a site to be determined by a coin flip.

Troy 64, Claremont 49--Jerry Inzunza had 27 points and Mark Ahlberg's 14 points and 12 rebounds for host Troy the Warriors (17-10) proved to be too much for the Wolfpack (19-8), winning by 14 points. Troy shut down Claremont in the third quarter, holding the Wolfpack to seven points. Tim Taylor was the top scorer for Claremont with 13 points, going 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Thomas Taylor added 10 points in the defeat.

"Their half-court trapping defense and man-to-man defense just did us in," said Riverside Poly coach John Tibbels. "As a team we weren't very sharp. But with only two of our 15 players graduating, we're already looking forward to next year." Marvin Lea scored 13 of his team-leading 18 points in the second half. Josh Dunaj added 13 points for the Bears (15-12). RIVERSIDE POLY (54) -- Irvin 4, Dunaj 13, Lea 18, Masi 3, Wilmot 4, Schiller 3, Quesada 3, Lopez 3, Fisher 1. Moreno Valley 84, Calexico 53-- It took about five minutes for the playoff jitters to wear off. Once they did, Moreno Valley dominated Friday's first-round Division I-A game against visiting Calexico. Behind 18 points from Khary Lands and 17 from Jerome Beasley, the Vikings cruised to an 84-53 victory.  The Vikings (19-7) didn't look sharp in the early going, turning the ball over repeatedly and drawing a technical foul for having six players on the court. Calexico (8-11) was not able to capitalize. The Bulldogs sank just 5 of 23 field goal attempts in the first half.   Moreno Valley got on track after the technical and closed the quarter with an 11-0 run. The Vikings extended the lead to 39-21 at halftime and put the game away by outscoring Calexico 25-14 in the third quarter.  Neither team connected for a three-pointer until Calexico's Fernie Fearro and Richard Alarcon sank back-to-back shots in the final half-minute. Lands made 8 of 12 field goal attempts and had four assists. Beasley had a game-high 15 rebounds.  CALEXICO (53) -- Fearro 15, Alarcon 15, Estrada 8, Perez 3, Torres 3, Arguelles 2, Fonseca 7.
