Weekend High School Hoops: All The  
Leagues, O-R--(Jan. 10, 1999)

We managed to collect most of the game results from around SoCal, throughout the Southern Section,  played Friday and Saturday (Unless otherwise indicated, these games were played on Friday). In order to make this a bit more manageable, we've split up our reports by league and we'll be filing several reports, exhausting the entire alphabet soup of the 70 or so leagues in SoCal's Southern Section.   In this one you'll find results and reports on games in all the leagues beginning with the letters O through R:  The Ocean, Olympic, Pacific, Pacific Coast, Pacific View,  Prep League and the Rio Hondo.

Ocean League.

Mira Costa 49, West Torrance 21--Jesse Boyd posted 11 points and six rebounds and Danny Lubinsky had 11 points and five rebounds to lift the host Mustangs (9-6, 3-0) over the Warriors (8-7, 2-1). Dante Brown added eight points, and Larry Pettis contributed seven points, five steals and five rebounds as the Mustangs built a 17-3 lead after one quarter. Chris Kettler led West with 11 points.

Beverly Hills 54, El Segundo--Despite James Foster-Keddie's 15 points and 14 rebounds, the host Eagles (6-9, 0-3) fell to the Normans (2-1 in league). J.T. Leitch notched 12 points and six assists for the Eagles, who watched Beverly Hills score the last four points to break open a 50-50 tie.

Hawthorne 71, Torrance 64--Adon Baines scored 30 points and the Cougars won the double-overtime game at Hawthorne.

Olympic League

Cerritos Vallcy Christian 49, Ontario Christian 38-- Ryan Fuqua scored 24 points and Steve Douma added eight rebounds but it wasn't enough to defeat Valley Christian. Eric Streelman led the way for Valley Christian (13-2, 2-0) with 16 points and 7 rebounds.  Jason Rudell had 14 points and five boards. With the loss, the Knights fall to 8-4, 0-1.

Calvary Chapel 52, Maranatha 42--J.J. Pangan and Brett Young each scored 11 points for Calvary Chapel (8-7, 1-1). Maranatha is 9-7, 1-1.

Orange Lutheran 62, Brethren Christian 50--Jason Wieldon had 24 points and four three-pointers for Orange Lutheran (7-7, 1-1). Kyle Painter also had four three-pointers for Brethren Christian (4-12, 0-2). He finished with a team-high 16 points. The Lancers used stifling defense in the fourth quarter, breaking away from a 43-43 tie to beat the visiting Warriors.  Patrick Salyer added 13 points for Orange Lutheran. Brethren Christian's Lee Mamaradlo added 11 points.

Pacific League

Glendale  78, Arcadia 68--Glendale had fiveplayers score in double figures in this league opening win against the Apaches, led by Tomik Iranosian and Vagram Amayakyan with 16 points each. The Nitros (9-7) also got a solid effort from center Artin Adjamian, who had 13 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. It was Adjamian and Iranosian who jump-started the Nitros early, as they combined for 13 points for a 19-13 first-quarter lead. Glendale led at the half 36-33 mostly on three point shooting by Iranosian Gilbert Yousefian. The Apaches (8-9, 0-1) gave up the first six points of the third quarter to trail, 43-33.  The Nitros took a 55-47 lead into the fourth quarter. Krikor Karamanoukian had six steals and six assists helping the Nitros extend their lead to 71-56 before garbage time in the fourth. Glendale plays at Pasadena High Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. Scoring by quarters: Acadia 13, 20, 14, 21 68; Glendale 19,   17,  19,  23, 78. Arcadia scorers were Barker 5, Hseih 2, Epps 12, Cox 16, Tang 10, Jackson 14, Bass 9. 3-pointers: Jackson 4, Cox 2. Glendale scoring was by Karamanoukian 5, Vagram Amayakyan 16, Adjamian 13 and 11 rebounds, Jankozian 11, Iranosian 16, Karibyan 12, Yousefian 3, Petrosyan 2. 3-pointers: Karibyan 3,  Iranosian, Yousefian.

Muir  70, Crescenta Valley 53--Muir took 68 shots from the floor, connecting on only 26 (38.2%) but it was still enough to win in a Pacific League opener on Friday night at Crescenta Valley High.  The Falcons hit on 16 of 41 (39%). Muir had the a slight rebounding edge, 32-30, but it's tough when a team takes 27 more shots than its opposition. Muir (16-1) had four players score in double figures, with forward Nate Johnson leading the way with 16 points. Guard Jeff Washington added 14 points including two 3-pointers and Jonathan Williams chipped in with 13 points off the bench. Crescenta Valley, which trailed, 28-20, at the half, was led by guard Brian Ostro's 16 points. The Falcons (13-4) came out and missed their first six shots to begin the second half, and when Washington scored with 5:15 left, Muir pulled ahead, 38-22. Johnson's rebound and put-back pushed the Mustang lead to 42-27, and when Washington scored at 2:15, the Mustangs were in front, 44-27. The Falcons made three of 11 in the third quarter, but finished stronger in the fourth quarter making five of nine. Kean Mallory finished with 13 points for the Falcons nine in the second half. Muir scoring by quarters: 18, 10, 20, 22: 70; CV.scoring by quarters: 7,  13,  11,  22: 53  Muir scorers were Bonwell 3, Johnson 16, Parker 12, Rowe 8, Washington 14, Williams 13, McKoy 3, Miller 1. 3-pointers: Washington 2. Williams 2. Bonwell. Johnson. Rowe. CV Myers 6, McCauley 0, Jenkins 6, Ostro 16, Tarne 6, Mallory 13, Hughes 5, Stewart 1. 3-pointers: Ostro. Tarne. Hughes.

Pacific Coast League

Aliso Niguel 57, Laguna Beach 45--Dave Camindina scored 14 points and had five assists to lead host Aliso Niguel (9-7, 1-0). The Wolverines outscored Laguna Beach, 19-8, in the third quarter to take a 41-26 lead. Ryan Ross added 13 points and Robert Deven had eight rebounds and four points for Aliso Niguel. Camadini scored seven of his 14 points in the fourth quarter Aliso Niguel led Laguna Beach 22-18 at the intermission.

University 70, Laguna Hills 67--Chet Johnson scored 24 points as visiting University rallied from a 29-26 halftime deficit. Larry Brown and Andy Lawrence each had 14 points for the Trojans.  Josh Pierson scored 24 points and had six assists for Laguna Hills (8-8, 0-1) and Jeff Eittreim had 20 points and eight rebounds.   Johnson nailed two free throws late in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Pacific View

Oxnard 58, Camarillo 54-- no details were available.

Prep League

Chadwick 86, Webb 58--John Tiberi scored a season-high 24 points and Peter McCaslin added 18 points as the Dolphins (7-8, 1-0) jumped to a 31-7 lead after one quarter. Ryan Maier contributed 16 points for Chadwick, and Brad Hofman netted nine points for Chadwick.

Pasadena Poly 71, Flintridge Prep 32--we were unable to locate the details of this game other than a box. Matt Lawler scored 20 and Koko Archibong also scored 20 for Poly which jumped out to a 19-2 first quarter lead.   Matt Easterlin scored 8, Hayden had 8, Herald 8, Roberts 6 and Haaga 1.   Flintridge only managed to score 6 points in the fourth quarter as well. Devin Brown had 6 points, Prickett 6, Young 5, Uyan 5, Kroop 4, Strnad 2, Harrison 2 and Winters 2.  Poly improved to 12-0 and 1-0 in league play while Flintridge Prep dropped to 4-10 overall and 0-1 in league. 

Rio Hondo League

Temple City 61, La Canada 55--The Spartans had won an amazing 59 consecutive league home games and have been crowned Rio Hondo League champs the past 11 years.  Friday night though the streak of home league games ended, as La Canada fell to Temple City High, 61-55, in a league opener at La Canada High. The loss drops the Spartans to 6-11, and  La Canada has now lost five straight games. Temple City improves to 9-7. La Canada was without starting forward Dutch Turley, who will miss the rest of the season after breaking his neck in a snowboarding accident.  Mark Futalan started in place of Turley and played well, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. The Spartans led after one quarter, 15-11, despite turning  the ball over eight times. La Canada headed into the second half with a 31-30 lead, but the third quarter was decisive in this game: A 3-pointer by Josh Johnson with 3:33 left in the quarter gave the Rams a 42-39 lead and Temple City never trailed again.  In the fourth quarter, Temple City hit on five of six free throws, and its biggest lead was 58-49 with 38 seconds left.   Futalan led La Canada with 10 points and seven rebounds. Jeff Riddell had 11 points, and Ian Sullivan had 9, all coming on 3-pointers. Temple City was led by Ralph Becerra, who scored 22 points. Temple City 11, 19, 17, 14, 61;  La Canada 15,  16, 14, 10, 55.  TC scoring was by Becerra 22, Josh Johnson 14, Jason Johnson 9 Salcido 8 and 11 rebounds, Hum 2, Toda 4, Gonzalez 2. 3-pointers: Becerra 4. Josh Johnson 3. Jason Johnson. La Canada scoring was by Riddell 11, Madigan 9, Futulan 16 and 10 rebounds, Sullivan 9, Swenson 6, Crane 1, Ballard 3. 3-pointers: Sullivan 3. Madigan. Ballard.
