The Week In Review: Results
From Around SoCal--(Jan 22, 1999)

The week of January 18-22 (excluding Friday's games, which we'll post up sometime this weekend), saw just a ton of action, but not as much as most weeks in SoCal, largely because many Southern Section schools hold final exams during this week for their first semester classes. Of course, many schools have already held first semester finals, so there was more than enough action to go around, including some huge performances, such as Gilbert Arenas' 42 points against Poly in City Section and Casey Jacobsen scoring 43 points on Monday night at the 5th Annual Nike Dream Classic, and then following that up against Upland with another big performance to become the second all-time scoring leader in California State history, just behind Tracey Murray who also coincidentally attended Glendora.

There were a number of other big performances.  Here's what we know and what we've been able to compile from various news sources (scouts, friends, personal observations, and, as always, the local papers, such as the LA Times, the Daily News, Long Beach Press-Telegram, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, Lompoc Record, Santa Barbara News-Press, the Riverside Press-Enterprise, and so on). We also haven't duplicated the results we posted earlier this week for the MLK games, because that would be just overkill.  Also, where we were unable to get details, we've posted the scores. Hey, something is better than nothing, and how else would many of you know what happened in these games. Enjoy.

With the Chargers leading 56-49 early in the fourth quarter, Legans made a clean steal in the Royals' backcourt. Rather than go straight to the basket, though, he slowed down and looked for teammate Alex Jenkins, who was streaking into the lane. Legans finally went to the basket, drawing a San Marcos defender, and purposely missed the layup so that it came off the backboard for Jenkins to ram home with a dunk. Legans and Jenkins, who earlier hooked up for a slam dunk on alley oop pass, both played a solid game from the outset. Legans had 31 points, six steals and five assists while Jenkins had 16 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots. Dos Pueblos improved to 15-4 overall and 3-0 in league while San Marcos fell to 7-9 and 1-1. Dos Pueblos, which also got 15 points from Johnny Ortiz, overcame a 17-14 first quarter deficit to lead 33-24 at halftime. San Marcos rallied a couple of times to cut the margin to a single basket in the second half, but Dos Pueblos met each Royal run with one of their own, eventually pulling away in the fourth quarter.  San Marcos' Mike Casias closed the third quarter with a basket, finishing off a 7-0 run and cutting Dos Pueblos' lead to 45-42.  Legans responded with a 3-pointer to open the fourth period. When Casias hit a 3-pointer and Bradlee Van Pelt followed with a driving basket to bring the Royals within a single point, Legans answered with a 3-pointer and a basket. Later, two free throws by Adam Nance and a 3-pointer by Randy Moharram cut the Dos Pueblos lead to 63-59. But a rebound basket and free throw by Brett Holbrook, a driving shot by Ortiz and a tip-in by Jenkins quickly pushed the margin to 70-59. The Royals got double-figure scoring nights from Nance (17), Trey Putnam (15) and Moharram (14). Nance also had 12 rebounds while Van Pelt had eight rebounds and eight points. But they had to overcome a poor shooting night overall, particularly in the second quarter. San Marcos missed its first 12 field goal tries in the second period to fall behind 29-20 and finished just 25 of 71 on the night. Dos Pueblos, which has won the last two Channel League titles, plays a non-league game against Oxnard Friday, then faces a showdown with Santa Barbara Wednesday.
