More Saturday SoCalGame Results Updated--(Jan. 11, 1999)

There were some additional games played Saturday night that we didn't report on earlier in our Weekend Hoops Updates.  One of the biggest results from late Saturday night was the Pacific Hills v. San Clemente game, which was won by Pacific Hills 53-52.  Wow.  D-V State Champs beat large-school Mater Dei league rival. No details yet, but we'll try to get hold of a report.  In the meantime, here are the rest of the Saturday games we managed to locate:

Non-League

Cornerstone Christian 56, Dunn 41--Andrew Tasker scored 22 points and the Eagles won a Condor League game at Cornerstone Christian.   Josh Miller and Phil Hahn each had 11 rebounds for Cornerstone Christian.

Laguna Blanca 46, Rolling Hills Prep 44--Chris Tamas, a 6-5 senior, scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to guide the Owls to a non-league victory at home. Brian Niehaus added 10 points and nine rebounds for Laguna, which improved to 9-5. After taking a 29-18 lead into the fourth period, the Owls had their lead trimmed to three points in the final minute.  Garrett Wilson hit a pair of free throws to give the home team a 46-42 lead with 12 seconds to play. Laguna opens Condor League play on Wednesday at Thacher. Scoring for Rolling Hills Prep were Hillier 8, Johnson 21, Perry 4, Elliott 4, DeAngelis 2, Kelley 3, Colich 2; scorers for Laguna Blanda were Wilson 5, Wicks 2, Tamas 19, Ferguson 8, Bradley 2, Niehaus 10. 3-point goals-RHP 3 (Johnson 2, Kelley), LB 2 (Ferguson 2). Total  fouls-RHP 10, LB 6. Fouled out-None.

Price  68, Flintridge Prep 44-- Jermaine Jamison scored 24 points and Othel Johnson added 17 to lead Price (14-2) to a 68-44 win over Flintridge Prep (4-11) in a nonleague game at Flintridge Prep.

St. Joseph 75, Bell-Jeff 53--Matt Cova led four players in double figures as the Knights posted an impressive non-league win over visiting Bell-Jeff. Cova scored 16 points, while Jason Williams, Dustin Kelly and Jason Young each added 10. St. Joseph improves to 11-5.

Liberty League

Yeshiva 54, Buckley 48-- This one was much closer than the score would indicate, and Buckley, which is now 2-1 in league and 8-4 overall, still had a chance to win the game with less than 30 seconds to play, but was forced into a fouling situation which send Yeshiva's Wintner to the line twice in the last 25 seconds, and he sank four to give Yeshiva it's first league win of the year.  Buckley was paced by Colin Ward-Henninger (6'-3" So. SG/SF) who had 18 points and 6 rebounds, and the fine defensive play of Mike Lalazarian (5'-10" Jr. SG) and David Gale (5'-10" Fr. PG) who had 3 and 4 steals, respectively;  Gale also had 4 assists and two points;  Alex Clancy (5'-10" So. SG) and Sasha Rabhan (5'-11" Sr. SG) each had 7 points; Rahban had 4 rebounds as well in a great defensive effort.    Four minutes into the game, Buckley trailed 12-4 on the fine shooting of Yeshiva's Pollak and Missry who combined for 8 points; Buckley then switched to it's trapping defense and fired up the offense, outscoring Yeshiva 5-1 in the remaining minutes in the first quarter, but still trailed 13-9 at the end of the first quarter;  in the second quarter, largely on the fine foul shooting of Adam Paster (6'-0" Jr. PG/SG), David Gale, and Lalazarian, Buckley managed to outscore Yeshiva 16-11, to lead by one, 25-24 at the half.   But in the third quarter, Yeshiva managed to adjust to the trapping matchup zone, and outscored Buckley 14-9, and then outscored the Griffins 19-14 in the fourth.  The outcome of the game would have been decidedly different had Buckley not been assessed a 10 point deficit on various technical and intentional foul calls, many of them extremely questionable.  The first series of strange calls came during the second quarter, as Michael Lalazarian was chasing Pollack downcourt, and while going for the ball, hit Pollack's arm and was called for an intentional foul;  this prompted a comment critical of the call from the Buckley coaching staff which drew an immediate technical, and then in yet another break from the action, it was determined that one of Buckley's players was inadvertently left off the official scoring book (a technical violation), even after the head ref had checked the starting lineups and the rosters. And because of the rule awarding possession to the team upon whom the foul was committed, Yeshiva managed to score another quick basket immediately off the inbounds.

Both teams were hurt by poor shooting overall, and neither team managed to score a lot of running, fast-break transition baskets.  Buckley was seemingly also hampered by its inability to capitalize on it's fairly complex pattern offense and even though Yeshiva stayed for the most part in a man defense, Buckley showed none of the crispness or good execution that they showed on Friday night when they beat Providence convincingly, a team which had been thought to be the best in the league. Yeshiva hit some key three pointers and long-range two's at opportune moments in the third and fourth quarter,  and from what the Yeshiva coaches said after the game, played an uncharacteristically good game. "We've had the benefit of having one of the best shooters in the league (Hami) for the last three years; but he's graduated and at best, we are an underdog in the league this year," coach Gelb told us after the game. "Some of our guys played the game of a lifetime tonight and we're very pleased with the win."

Buckley will play at Viewpoint on Wednesday,  January 13, and then again at Windward on January 15 before starting a four-game home stand on January 19 against Holy Martyrs.  Yeshiva will play at Windward on Tuesday, January 12, and then will play Viewpoint on Saturday, January 16 at Santa Monica High in the North Gym at 8:30 p.m.

Metro League

Lake Arrowhead Christian 60, Upland Christian 47--Brian Cromer shot 13 of 18 from the field for his team-high 27 points to lead Upland Christian. Eric Toupal added 10 rebounds, and Matt Chiappone had 12 points for Upland Christian (1-8, 0-3). Lake Arrowhead (1-2) was led by the Mitch Denny with a game high 30 points, and Noah Denny added 18.

Olympic League

Maranatha 71, Whittier Chr. 60--Jon Stoa scored 16 points for the Heralds (10-6, 1-1), who lost at Whittier Christian.

Ontario Christian 63, Huntington Beach Brethren Christian 50-- Eugene Verkaik scored a career high 20 points with 11 rebounds and Steve Douma added 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead Ontario Christian to a 63-50 victory over Huntington Beach Brethren Christian in an Olympic League boys basketball game Saturday. Ryan Fuqua had a big contribution in the victory with nine points, nine assists and five steals. Lee Mamaradlo of Brethren Christian led all scorers with 24 points in the loss. The Knights (9-4, 1-1) play their next league game Tuesday at Maranatha at 7:30 p.m.
