adidas Double Pump Hoop Challenge Game 9
Preview: Bishop Montgomery v. Serra--(Jan. 15, 1999)

What: 1st Annual adidas Double Pump Hoop Challenge
Nine games: First game 9:00 a.m.; last game starts 9:00 p.m.
When: Saturday January 16, 1998, MLK, Jr. Holiday Weekend
Where: Cal State Dominguez Hills, Carson California

The ninth and final game of the day will tip-off at 9:00 p.m. between Bishop Montgomery and Serra. Bishop Montgomery is ranked No. 1 in SoCal in the DIII-A coaches poll and Serra, unbelievably, is not ranked at all (and just in case you think we're making this up, the coaches poll also doesn't rank Verbum Dei for goodness sakes. . . these guys need to get out a bit more). Of course, in the Cal-Hi Poll, Bishop Montgomery is ranked No. 3 in the State of California in Division III, while Serra is ranked, No. 2 in Division IV (right behind No. 1 Verbum Dei). . . at least these guys get out more often.   Regardless of rankings, this will be an excellent matchup and a great way to cap an unbelievable (and maybe unbelievably long) day of great hoops action.

Here are the rosters:

Serra Cavaliers

D.J. Wyatt (5'-9" Jr. PG)

Serra has played in 5 CIF title games last season making it to the Southern Section Division IV-A Finals, and advancing to the State Tournament. They’re loaded again, and feature least threeD-I college prospects: Aerick Sanders, a junior, is a huge force in the blocks and on the boards, and Doyle Cole, the most versatile player on the team is averaging close to 18 ppg. Earl Lewis, can score inside or out, and is being recruited by Auburn, Washington, Oregon and OSU; Ryan Odums is probably the best shooter on the team, and Sean Weston will sign a football scholarship. Point guard D.J. Wyatt, has played well in the preseason too, and he will be helped by Jermaine Foster, and Warren Rogers Robert Lewis is also the QB of the football team and adds strength and versatility, as do Ryan Plummer and Lee Davis.

It’s likely that two of the best Knight players will be unavailable due to injury, but if Brian Pruitt and Tony Booker do play, you’ll see two very talented ball handlers and scorers. Even without them, the Knights are a threat with lots of sophs, including possibly the two best sophomores in SoCal, Errick and Derrick Craven. On the wing, Leland Dodd will be a threat, and the Knights also have Marvin Perez, a great perimeter shooter. Inside will be Gabriel Hughes covering the paint and blocking shots. At point, the team is very deep with Kenny D’Oyen, the Cravens, and DeVaughn Peace, David Colbert and Quincy Kelly all capable of running the team. Garrett Lee is a tenacious rebounder and scorer, while Eric Torres will clean the glass and defends down low.

A great game, 9:30 p.m. at Cal State Dominguez Hills.  See you there.

And then we all get to take Sunday off to write about it, before doing it all over again on Monday at Pauley Pavilion.  See you there too.
